my bad on the typo

Well what if those 2 guys combine for 30 sacks? Spags has no DEs to do what he likes to do, I think if you get him one or both then this defense would be very good, especially if we could grab another quality LB or safety in the draft(not sure Harper fits and Vilma is probably done and it's time to get ride of Shanle finally)

Oh I agree with you. I know Spags will have to do some rebuilding to get the D to where he likes it. If he can do some tinkering to get us to the top half of the league, we are much more difficult to stop next year.

We sign Avrill and Williams, and trade them for 2 first round picks.

I feel you, but I just think we need to make an aggressive move on defense and we don't need Colston and Nicks to keep rolling on offense, I would like to keep both, but if we're gonna try to upgrade the defense then one of them might be the best we could do.

It will cost the Texans $21 million to franchise Mario for next year... They're loaded why would they do that for a player playing out of position?

I'm still not sure about the $21m. I'm not some super expert on the cap, but I was under the impression that he made a bit under $14m last year. The %120 his previous season number is absolutely correct. So I've seen two very different numbers as to what he made last year, either a bit undder $14m or, as Fox says, $18m. I've seen the $14m number elsewhere at legit sites.

But frick my cap # ramblings. They WILL still franchise him if it costs them $21m. The NFL is about to enter the era where the cap floor is way higher than in the past, so some teams will have to spend money. Still, just because they franchise him doesn't mean they will end up paying him. They're going to franchise him and then allow him to begin talking to other teams about a longterm deal. He's going to come to an agreement with someone and that will give them a chance to get AT LEAST an early second/late first.

Basically, I PROMISE you that if they franchise him, another team will give them SOMETHING for Mario Williams.

So does putting Shanle's stats up to 99 everything. Then trading him for an awesome player. Then dropping all of his stats to where they belong. somewhere in the 20s.

No way we let both Colston and Nicks walk. and if we do. I expect a HUGE move for some defensive players on the FA. And it would only be because Spags asked for it. Payton loves his offense

do teams get to tender a franchise player to whatever draft pick they want or is it already set in stone $21million = 2 first rds etc....?

Exactly, so you get it?

So after GW talked about Shanle's versatility, saying how he could play safety, I went to try it out on Madden. The game asked me "Are you sure?"

No Payton's not stupid. Why the hell would he let go of his best wide reciever and O-lineman?

He may not have a choice. I would love if we are able to sign Brees, Colston and Nicks. In all likelihood, we're losing Colston or Nicks.

Cuz he knows we suck horribly on D
And we cant sign both Colston and Nicks. I say we keep Colston and move DLP back to guard

I'm not saying he will but Payton's starting players are:
Nicks(5th round)
Evans(4th round)
Colston(7th round)
Graham(3rd round)
Bushrod(4th round)
Pierre Thomas(undrafted)
Zach Streif(7th round)

In other words we scout offense really well and can replace them if need be

I think you're confusing restricted free agent tenders with franchise tags. There are exclusive rights franchised players (which cost more to franchise, other teams aren't allowed to even speak to them without permission IIRC) and the more frequently used generic "franchised" players. With franchised player, the team has a chance to match ANY deal. If they opt not to, the other team HAS to give up 2 first round picks for that season. That rarely (maybe never has) happens. Typically if the team applying the tag doesn't expect to keep the player, they negotiate the cost for the player since teams pretty much never want to give up 2 first round picks + a massive contract (Brees would be one of the few players worth it). So in the end the team with the player's rights will drop the cost to, say, a 1st and 2nd round picks. Or just a 1st, or even just a 2nd, which is likely what we would get for Nicks.

There is no set price for all players. There's a different price for each position (QB, OL, DL, WR, LB, DB, K, P). Just google franchise tag cost and you will find the specifics of what they have cost in the past. They changed the way the tag cost is determined this past season, so they're actually going to be slightly cheaper than what it was in 2010. I don't think the exact costs have been released yet.

The reason Williams would be so pricey is he had a huge cap hit in his final year of his massive rookie deal. Whatever the cost is to franchise a player (say, $12m to franchise a DE), the player is guaranteed at least 120% of what he made the previous season. So if Williams made $5m or something like that last year, he would cost the typical franchise cost for the DE position of $13m. But he already made more than that last season (maybe), so the NFL won't punish him for getting franchised, so he gets 120% of what he made in 2011. So it's just a debate as to whether Williams made about $13m last season or $18m last season, which is kind of tough to find right now.
