The Saints' draft history makes it difficult for me to get excited about picking a DT in round 1. I know it's a critical need for this team but I just can't help but think whatever DT we draft will turn into a fat bust

Rankins is the only one I think doesn't have that kind of bust potential. Its kind of the other way...will he be big enough to handle DT full time in the NFL?

I've seen some mocks dropping Billings to the 2nd round. I'd even be ok going Rankins then Billings. Those two with Jenkins, Williams, Cam and Kakaha would be a lot of trouble up front.

I want Rankins more than any DT available. Reminds me of La Roi w/ how he is undersized but quick and agile

Rankins should be the #1 DT on our board. Versatile with his positions. While somebody could argue Billings is just as good/better, I don't think so for us specifically. He'd do fine if we took him, but I think he's going to reach his full potential quicker if he goes to a team that plays him as a true NT. I also like Reed more than Robinson if we're talking about Bama DT prospects. Chris Jones is another that has been rising for me. I think him and Reed are 3a/3b for me. Then obviously you have the Butlers, Clarks, Days, Collins, Washingtons of the draft who are all good and will get drafted anywhere from the late first to late second.

I think Billings would fit better in the 34 defense where looking to run.

Judging from SP's comments we will be a 43 but you will see different looks.

All 3 of those guys are different types of DTs. The true value comes with the scheme you plan on using them in. I assume most fans are hoping for an interior DL guy who can shoot the gaps and be effective in the pass rush, so I can see why Rankins is the popular choice.

IMO the best value pick in the draft is either Kenny Clark or Jonathan Bullard.

I think we all remember what happened with Jonathan "Sully Bear" Sullivan...

Vernon Butler fits the Ashawn Robinson mold. And maybe has a better motor/ceiling.

Stiffer PED testing will hurt Robinson. It always catches up to Alabama players.

I'm with you brother, whoever we draft defensively will be a bust. Simple as that just look how Anthony couldn't cut it under vittd bad coaching. Had to move positions becuase of his inabilty to play at the NFL level, I've read this book before and I don't like where it's going.

I'd rather just try to outscore the other team, it will take years to get a decent defense.

I agree. Any of them at 12 is not good value in my opinion. This is a trade back for one of them, Reed, or Ragland. The only possibilities I see to address the defense most directly are picking Jack or Hargreaves, but neither will likely be there at 12. I don't think we can afford to trade up either. I'd be looking to trade back.
