Sheldon Mickles cuts to 53

So here’s a guess at how it might shake out when the final cuts come down:
QUARTERBACKS (3): Drew Brees, Patrick Ramsey, Chase Daniel.
Payton has been known to keep just two, but Ramsey and Daniel have both looked good, and Daniel may not get through waivers.
RUNNING BACKS (5): Reggie Bush, Pierre Thomas, Chris Ivory, Ladell Betts, Heath Evans.
Ivory, a free agent, has made his case to join Bush and Thomas in the three-headed monster role, but they may have to keep Betts around for experience — if his knee is strong enough.
WIDE RECEIVERS (5): Marques Colston, Devery Henderson, Robert Meachem, Lance Moore, Courtney Roby.
Based on special teams ability, Roby beats out Adrian Arrington for the fifth spot if the leg injury Roby suffered Friday isn’t serious.
TIGHT ENDS (3): Jeremy Shockey, David Thomas, Jimmy Graham.
Tory Humphrey might be on the bubble, but he’s had his moments in camp. They may have to keep four because of injury concerns.
OFFENSIVE LINE (9): Jermon Bushrod, Carl Nicks, Jonathan Goodwin, Jahri Evans, Jon Stinchcomb, Zach Strief, Nick Leckey, Charles Brown, Matt Tennant.
This position could be affected by injury as well after Strief left Friday’s game with a knee injury.
DEFENSIVE LINE (8): Alex Brown, Sedrick Ellis, Remi Ayodele, Will Smith, Anthony Hargrove, Jeff Charleston, Jimmy Wilkerson, DeMario Pressley.
Hargrove and Wilkerson give the Saints a little extra because they both play tackle and end. Bobby McCray and Al Woods may be the odd men out.
LINEBACKERS (7): Scott Shanle, Jonathan Vilma, Jonathan Casillas, Marvin Mitchell, Jo-Lonn Dunbar, Anthony Waters. There’s not much fat to trim here after releasing veteran Troy Evans last week.
DEFENSIVE BACKS (10): Jabari Greer, Roman Harper, Malcolm Jenkins, Tracy Porter, Randall Gay, Patrick Robinson, Usama Young, Chip Vaughn, Chris Reis, Leigh Torrence.
Darren Sharper may have to start the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list, which will sideline him for six games.
SPECIALISTS (3): Garrett Hartley, Thomas Morstead, Jason Kyle.
Since they had no competition in camp, they get in by default.

Looks alright. I'd cut the DBs to 9 taking out Torrence if you're going to keep Usama around. If we have a rash of CB injuries I'd rather Mckenzie off the street than Leigh Torrence. Probably add a TE, somehow get Gillete on the roster. I wouldn't cry if we cut either QB either.

I know a lot of folks are writing Arrington off, but I'm not. Payton kept him around because he thought he could play...we now know he can. With Arrington, we could have a "Big Package" with Colston and Arrington that could damn near impossible to cover in the Red Zone.
My guess is he makes the team.
Arrington will NEVER make it to the PS. Too many teams need a tall WR and he's shown he can play in this league.
Where will be roster spot come from? I expect to see Graham go on IR and learn the game a little better.

At LB he has 7 in parenthesis but only lists 6.

I agree Arrington makes the team. Our WRs except for Devery get injured constantly. I don't think we need to keep Betts. There are plenty of street RBs available throughout the year.
ETA: I'd keep Torrence we need CB depth. MM is a fat frick now he let himself go Deuce-style. He's done.

I don't see betts making the cut at this point. I'd rather his spot go elsewhere

Yeah, I'd just keep (4) RB's (including Evans). I'd hate to have to let Chase Daniel go, bc I think he is making great strides on learning how to run the offense. Just not sure that he is the best choice to be #2 this year. Both are upgrades over an old Brunell, imo.
I had heard good things about Gallette. Surprised that he isn't even in the discussion. I also think Ingram could make the team, if he is close to being ready.
I guess Al Woods was a reach in Round 4. Maybe he's one of those guys who looks better than he plays. He probably s/h/b an OL at LSU.

Our draft this year was kind of disappointing on the backend. Woods and Canfield haven't even sniffed the active roster at any point.
Maybe that's just what happens when you have a Super Bowl caliber roster though - not many roster spots that have openings so your later draft picks go to waste.
I'd rather have traded them away for future picks though than waste them on flyers like Woods and Canfield who never truly competed.

I liked what Billings and the backup TE showed last week. Hope they make the PS.

If they release Arrington, St Louis Rams need to jump on him quick.
They have some serious WR problems.

Bingo. RB's of that caliber are a dime a dozen.
Arrington over Betts.

I hope Stanley Arnoux will amount to something.

arnoux can't seem to stay healthy.
woods probably had his best game of the preseason friday, but that really isn't saying much.

How, exactly, do you expect Graham to learn the game better if he's on IR? Players on IR are not allowed to practice, per NFL rules.

Torence sucked until that INT, I don't think that is reason enough to keep him!
and Betts is a good RB once his knee is healthy, once again we are talkin about positions of quantity, RB's like WR's do go down during the regular season. So it makes no sense to cut Arrington or Betts!

I can't see Betts making the team since he hasn't taken a snap. If we do release him, he should be available since I cannot see anyone scooping him up since he is surely out of football shape.

Betts played Fri night. caught a pass

Putting him on IR was based upon the high ankle sprain. This FO has shown that they're quick to put a rookie on the IR for lesser reasons.
As for your question, I believe there are more ways of learning the game than just attending practice. The guy has only played 1 year of college ball.

And how, exactly, do you propose that someone learn to play the position on an NFL level when he isn't allowed to practice with the team?
I agree that putting him on IR is a very likely outcome, but I also believe that his "learning the position" is not the best reason.
