Saints OC Pete Carmichael called the team's plays in Week 1. The Saints piled up 507 yards and 34 points on a supposedly improved Raiders defense, though somehow lost the game. Coach Sean Payton left the door open for his lieutenant to continue calling plays. "It is a week-to-week thing," Payton said. "I will still be very much involved in a handful of those calls and so it is an operation for us, this is year 10 or 11 now that we will just handle week to week." Payton has dabbled with surrendering play-calling in the past, but never given it up full time. Carmichael's Week 1 work likely earned him an extended audition.

Well you have to admit the D wasn't expecting that. Play was obvious not one that has been practiced much though.

Until his tendencies are found through analytics as well.

Yup and then its adjusting again. The good teams can and the 5-0 pretenders can't. You know who you are

The last time he called plays was in 2011 and 2012. Both years we were great on offense.

They are both pretty great callers when the offensive line plays well. I did enjoy the quick passes. Those 3-4 yard routes might not look like much, but it's something the patriots converted too to take pressure off their oline.

Yeah first half was beautiful. Lots of questionable calls second half.

Though Payton did said he had input at times, and that third down draw is totally something he'd call.

Lost it. Was completely dumbfounded by that play call.

37 year old quarterback signs 22mil/year extension. "Let's start getting Drew in space some more"

Evaluate the performance of the players, real time.

So Pete will now call for the rest of the year according to ESPN as Coach Payton relinquishes the duty. Wonder how long this will last. But we are the Number 1 offense right now at least in yards.
