Salary cap

Where does this put the Saints in terms of cap space?

somewhere close to a 30 million number for the time being before any further moves. but with the carry over numbers etc. gets complicated.

inbetween 30-34.6 depending upon if we june 1st byrd.

there's also a couple restructures of bonuses we can do to further create if needed.

I use overthecap and they said the cap was $1 mil less than their estimate of $168 mil.

So as Chad said we're a little north of $30 mil (didn't get to look at specifics).

With adjustments by Armstead, Unger, and Strief upcoming we will be much closer to $40 mil (at least $38 mil iirc).

Also we don't get the extra $4+ mil for Byrd until June 1st, and that pretty much pays for the draft picks, PS, and the 52nd and 53rd players when they start counting.

Just to be clear I meant they were $1 mil over their estimate of the cap because they guessed it would be $168.

It may have sounded like I meant something else originally.

Checking what I could on my phone (it doesn't like otc), we'll actually be slightly over $29.5 mil under the cap when Byrd is released.

I couldn't check the savings on the bonus conversions of Armstead, Unger, and Strief but will when I get home.

On Byrd specifically, we save $3.2 mil now and another $4.6 mil on June 1st if we designate him as such.

When he is released it'll be $8 mil dead money on the cap this year (but again we are still saving $3.2 mil at first over that $8 mil because his cap hit was $11.2 mil). That goes down to $3.4 mil come June 1st (again if designated) and $4.6 mil gets pushed to next year's cap and clear as much from this year's.

His cap hit for next year was $11.7. That drops to $4.6 mil if we designate him, or is completely cleared if not.

The Ravens letting Brandon Williams walk is crazy, he would be my go to signing day 1.

I thought we were going to keep him at first, but CSP made it a point to keep saying how deep this years draft is at the safety position(as well as CB & RB). He was pretty much telling us what their plan was. Personally, I wanted to keep him 1 more year, b/c replacing him with a complete bust would be devastating to the defense. While Byrd was overpaid...we could do a lot worse. Bell is still developing & Vaccaro can't play mid-deep coverage. If Bell hasn't improved from last year & we bring in a bust to play alongside him, then it could get very ugly...especially if we also don't improve our pass rush.

In the same interview...he mentioned how weak of an O-Line draft it is. With our need for a starter at OG...we likely use free agency. He said that if you want a starter at this position, then you basically have to take your target in the 1st round. Taking any OG in this draft at #11 is horrible value and an act of desperation imo. Even worse than last year when the 49ers took Joshua Garnett at #28(most people thought he was a late 2nd/3rd round guy).

Everyone still sleeping on that Harris kid that's coming back from injury this year. He looked real promising.

Plus Bell will improve. I don't think he'll be worse than Byrd this year, but if he is yeah we may need help.

I got around to getting the numbers and with Byrd cut we sit at $30 mil under.

Once Armstead, Unger, and Strief have their roster bonuses converted we'll be at $38.16 mil under.

That should be plenty enough to do what we want to do, but there are options to create more space if need be (restructuring Brees, Jordan, Armstead, Fleener, Ingram, or Morstead and extending Vaccaro).
