Saints need to make linebacker the #1 priority this offseason. Need a stud OLB badly.

Ellerbe and Robertson are both studs, and Mauti and Stupar have played pretty well. We also rarely use 3 LBs at the same time.

So I definitely wouldn't call it the number 1 priority.

Now of course there is injury concern (especially with Ellerbe) but look what happened at CB this year. We have several positions where one injury will make a big difference. I think we can survive one at LB better than one at CB and I think that's a more important position (again considering we are in nickel way more than "base").

But I'd go with guard as the most important. Kelemete has played well but Lelito has busted out and Evans ain't going much longer. We NEED a guard early in the draft or FA (and we may go that route given all the cap we will have).

I think the money should definitely be used to retain Fairley, grab a guard, a corner, and a pass rusher. And then maybe double down at those positions in the draft as well as grabbing a LB. Let Strief play one more year and worry about if we need a tackle in 2018.

With the receivers restocked and center solidified I think outside of guard our offense is fine (not that we should ignore grabbing studs if available).

Defense we are definitely more thin at a bunch of positions. Most focus should definitely go there.

If you knew everything Joey did behind the scenes you'd probably say he deserves a hefty raise

Saints Defense Ranking in Points Allowed

2014 28th (7-9)
2015 31st (7-9)
2016 30th (4-5)

NOBODY in administration deserves a hefty raise.

No, they would never. I mean we saw how bad Devery Henderson was. All they reject football players from the isle of misfit toys end up in Baton Rouge.

We didnt blow a lot of money on him. Compared to other moves I was fine with this one. He is probably the best LB coach on the team...I am sure he did wonders for Stupar and Robertson.

Yes. They signed 3 linebackers in free agency and 2 of the 3 worked out. Hard to complain about this one. Plus it was not a serious financial commitment.

There is no way I can ever rely on Ellerbe to play an entire season. Robertson has looked really good. Tackling machine. Mauti and Stupar are quality depth, but the Saints need a true linebacker who can make plays.

I'd be fine with that. All in favor of signing a veteran corner or up and comer to anchor the 2nd spot. Definitely would throw big money at a guard to shore up the line and a pass rusher as well. Let the draft fall where it may, but I expect the Saints to go defense with that first pick.

Might not even get to 9 wins this season, but they are set up to be a 10-13 win team next year. I like the core. Offense especially could be filthy. Just need a few more pieces.

Here is the deal about Anthony. He knows the playbook. That narrative was bullshite that beat writers put out there.
He got seriously injured during preseason and Payton swept it under the rug. He rushed him back and made it worse. Why do you think he has showed up on every injury report without taking a single game snap?
Payton is hoping to have him later but it's another case of mishandling injuries.

I totally agree with all points. We definitely need a playmaker at LB if Ellerbe can't stay healthy (which it seems he can't) and could still use one anyway.

I just think guard is about to be such a HUGE hole next year (unless Evans keeps up this fountain of youth). That has to be target number one both because of age and depth concerns.

Then you have to worry about LB, CB, and pass rusher all because of injury and depth concerns, but we aren't as bad off as we are at guard at those spots.

And I wouldn't completely ignore safety if we want to move on from Byrd. We need another deep cover with range to pair with Bell (who can play deep or in the box and slot) so KV can stay around the line. He freaking wrecks things around the line and playing the slot.

I can buy that B&G. But I don't think he's been on every injury report. That seems more recent (maybe because someone said something to the league?).

I wouldn't completely doubt the playbook thing though. He may be struggling a bit with it but not enough to keep him off the field. I think it may be more of a thing where he was a Ryan guy and Allen doesn't want to use him.

Not sure why the Saints signed him

just watching him play against The Raiders...he looked "soft". Almost never made a solo tackle and if he was the first to make contact with a runner, he got run over.

That's what I've been told about the situation. Allens playbook isn't massively complicated either. He's just seriously hurt.

I hope that's the case with Anthony. Next year, he'll still have 2 years left on his deal(I think), so there's still plenty of time for to him become a legit LB. I doubt we can get a mid round pick for him, so I'm rooting for the guy. It would be huge if we can get good play from him.
