re: Saints sign Tackle Jason Smith

Not to mention Bushrod and Strief get helped a lot. So, that takes your RB, TE, or whomever out of their route to chip, double team, etc. Jimmy Graham coming untouched off the line and Sproles/PT out of the backfield without having to chip would get a good jump on whatever LB was trying to cover him.

Looks like a low risk, high reward deal to me.

Good signing.

GTFO of here with that. A fantasy football teams shitty performance naming 1 player (when the rest of his team or draft probably blew)

Orrr, I could've meant that he drafted SJAX really high, essentially wasting a draft pick, thus creating a terrible lineup for the rest of his team.

quote:

Drew shifts around in the pockets so he is highly dependent on good guards. Yes he has a quick release, but they both make each other better.

WTF?? Guards are utilized more for run-blocking which is why you don't see as many sacks for defensive tackles. There's a reason they say LT's PROTECT the blind side of most qb's, because that's where most of the rush is coming from, the defensive ends.

What a monung head.

I think Smith could be better than Bushrod. Cutler's gonna find out that he doesn't protect a qb that stands too long in the pocket. Brees helped bushrod get his money.

It has been discussed here and written about in several articles if I remember right how the guards and the center are very important to Drew. He likes to step up in the pocket and not roll to either tackle to buy some time.
The Saints o-line and Brees are very specific about his throwing lanes the guards must make because of his lack of height. This is why we have a ton more money invested in guards as you say who "run block" than in our tackles and always have.

It's called the blind side because most qb's are right handed It's because you're best tackle is blocking on an island by himself usually. A RT is more important to a left handed qb...

Again completely irrelevant to the conversation.

You drunk? Even if Bushrod is overrated, which I am not arguing against, if this was even remotely possible Smith, a 26 year old former 2nd overall pick, would have gotten a lot more dough regardless of how bad his qb's have been... See Willie Roaf

The player you named that said Drew makes look better was Jahri Evans.. A GUARD

And yes while guards are very important to the run game, we quite frequently give help to our sub par tackles with TE's and running backs chipping to flood the DE's out where as our guards are one on one.

This.

Exactly what I was alluding to when I said our guards are very important to Drew.

Not mad......bro....just good to have a dispute on here every once in awhile. Most of the time I agree with what's written on here.

Me:

So, our guards ARE important BC Drew is stepping up to avoid a pass rush from the edge.....typically. With that said, though a DE beats an average LT/RT, Drew has the ability to step up and make a throw because of POCKET PRESENCE/AWARENESS, something Bradford and mostly Sanchez lack in a lot of instances.

To sum up my opinion, I just feel like Drew can help unlock this guy's potential that the other teams/qbs couldn't. And I'm saying that Smiht has a higher ceiling than Bushrod.

dude was a bust in St Lou then traded to Jets where was released. Hopefully he can turn around his fortunes, but I'm just looking at the Saints tryin to get better off of signing a lot of questionable, oft injured people career wise because it's cheap.

1) They have under $2m in cap space right now
2) No FA in the entire NFL has signed a contract worth more than $3m/yr since Umenyiora on March 27th.

Does Chad really start a thread with no content so he can be first and then edit it after?

Yep. It's gotten to the point when I see we sign someone I just start looking up info about the player cause I know Chad started the thread already. It doesn't bother me. He wants it bad.

Not a biggie compared to other stuff going on around here. It shouldn't effect us trading back or anything.

SUN OUT!!!

Smith, 27 later this month, was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2009 draft by the Rams, but he proved to be a complete bust. Concussions forced him to miss 19 games in three years with St. Louis, and he was traded to the Jets for Wayne Hunter last summer. Smith appeared in all 16 games with New York in 2012 as an extra tackle. He'll compete for a roster spot in training camp.

I believe this guy had a concussion in his rookie season that knocked him out for the season.

re: Saints sign Tackle Jason Smith
PFF opinion on the Smith signing:

quote:

In an interesting move, New Orleans picked up the 2009 draft’s second overall pick, Jason Smith. What makes this fascinating is that while he may not have been everything the Rams wanted, on and off the field, when he did play, he wasn’t a complete disaster — certainly not by the pass-blocking standards of, say, 2007 fifth overall selection Levi Brown in Arizona, who is still with his team.

Of course he had bad days — in 2010 Lamar Houston and Tamba Hali both made hay against him, and in the last game of that season he gave Raheem Brock a career game (3 sacks, a hit and 7 hurries). However, that same year, he had perfect games in pass pro against Washington, San Diego, Denver and San Francisco, with only a single hit allowed against Arizona. That, his only full season in the NFL, saw him register a poor but hardly criminal -6.5 grade with at least 12 other starting RTs grading more poorly, including Phil Loadholt, Bryan Bulaga and Anthony Davis.

Last year, with the Jets, he played almost exclusively as a sixth offensive lineman in the tight end position. Clearly it’s difficult to properly evaluate him there, but in his 265 snaps he generally graded positively, particularly as a run blocker.

That’s a very similar record to a certain Zach Strief in 2010 who fulfilled an almost identical role for the Saints before subsequently moving on to become their starting right tackle. Much as we like Strief, he struggled badly with injury last year and it’s possible the Saints see a similar career path for Smith — initially playing him as an extra OL and if all goes well (or if Strief gets injured again), promoting him to right tackle.

The Saints have had some good luck with reclamation projects. This guy hasn't burned out completely. They might be able to light the right fire under him. dlP is a great current example. He was on his eighth team stop when he came in here. Ended up as one of the top ranked Centers by PFF last year.

With dlp I think he was just miscast as a guard.
