Saints Press Release:

The New Orleans Saints announced today that they have agreed to terms on a four-year contract with unrestricted free agent cornerback Jabari Greer.

“Jabari is a young and energetic corner and will fit in nicely into our defensive backfield,” said Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis. “He’s an aggressive player and has outstanding speed and athleticism and translates the skills very well to the football field. We are excited to have him join our team.”

Greer, 5-11, 180 pounds, broke into the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2004 as a member of the Buffalo Bills and spent the past five seasons with the Bills. Greer played his collegiate football at the University of Tennessee, where he was a three-year starter for the Volunteers and also was and a record-setting member of the school’s nationally-ranked track program.

Over the course of his five-year professional career, Greer has played in 70 career regular season games, making 26 starts, and has registered 140 tackles (114 solo) and 26 assists, along with four interceptions for 76 yards, 33 passes defensed and two sacks.

“We are excited about acquiring Jabari. He has the skill set you are looking for in a corner,” said Head Coach Sean Payton. “He brings speed and cover ability to the position. He has come into this league and quickly has established a reputation for himself and we are very pleased with this addition to our team.”

Greer moved into a starting role in 2007 with the Bills and has started 23 games over the course of the last two seasons, registering 90 tackles, four interceptions and 26 passes defensed. In week four of the 2007 NFL season, Greer was named as the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Week when he recorded six tackles and two passes defensed and made the first interception of his career during the fourth quarter that set-up a Bills touchdown.

In 2008 Greer scored the first touchdown of his career via a 33-yard interception and return at St. Louis, and four weeks later he also scored on a 42-yard interception return against the Jets in Orchard Park. Greer was on pace to set career highs in nearly every meaningful statistical category for a defensive back before being sidelined for the Bills’ final six games of the regular season due to a knee injury.

While at Tennessee, Greer started his final three seasons and was one of the team’s top playmakers. He set a school record by appearing in 51 career contests and finished his career with 147 tackles (119 solo), 3.5 sacks, 11.5 tackles for losses, 33 passes defensed, two interceptions and a forced fumble and fumble recovery.

He also lettered in track and owns the distinction of breaking Willie Gault’s school record in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 11.34. Greer also was the 2003 NCAA champion in the 60-meter indoor hurdles, and also claimed Gault’s school-record in that event. Greer graduated from Tennessee with a degree in psychology.

depends on the price.

ETA: assuming we cut MM, we now have one starter and three nickle backs.

Its a young CB with experience. Whats not to like? If he can be our dime or nickel back then that would be great.

Say goodbye to McKenzie. If he stays, it will be at a greatly reduced salary.

In GW we trust

he's young, fast, and has a good skill set....so it at least sounds promising.

I like this move the more I think about it. I dont think he going to be our nickle. I think he willstart opposite Porter with Gay going to nickle and JD in a Dime. MM will be gone UNLESS as stated he takes a major paycut. Glenn is gone and Young may be tried out at safety.

We don't sign anybody new, the attitude here is "the sky is falling, we need to upgrade on D", etc...then we sign a young new corner and everyone seems down on the move.

We don't sign Bartell, people here are blasting the FO saying how stupid it was not to pay the man...then we sign a different up-and-coming young corner, and people don't like it.

I don't get it.

not upset at all but he's definitely not the answer to our DB woes just more path work

eta: thats not saying the answer was even out there. we're just paying for years of ignoring the position via the draft

Im pretty sure the Bills run a man scheme as well so that is a definite plus. Im personally happy about this move for right now. I guess I'll find out next season. That being said, MM is probably gone.

Greer is a great signing... a player who is an above average starter and has the ability to hold his own against most starting calibur WRs in the league. He only allowed 5.6 yards per pass attempt thrown his direction last season, which was one of the better rates in the entire NFL.

nevermind, according to rotoworld Buffalo ran the Tampa 2. Not so excited now. Hopefully he can make the transition faster than David did.
