It's pretty obvious at this point that the FO thought they could get by with sub-par talent on the front seven like they did last year...

Im assuming winning a Super Bowl with all that sub par talent didn't help their case any either.............

anybody know about this guy?...

The Bears are trying to trade LB Tim Shaw before they release him.
A report on Friday indicated that Shaw had been released, but it turned out to be premature. Shaw set a franchise record with 30 special-teams tackles last year, so the Bears are shopping him to teams in need of a coverage ace.

Every team has holes, even Super Bowl teams. You don't stay on top for long by having that attitude.

Not saying the Saints don't have holes, no team is perfect. We have obvious ones, again, like other teams. I just think it's worthy pointing out that the current attitude that apparently doesn't let you stay on top helped us get to the top. I think it's more of a reflection to what good coaching can do rather than elite talent.

If anything, maybe Lance Moore and a mid-late draft pick.

Moore isn't going anywhere.

A great offense and turnovers helped us overcome a pretty bad defense last year. We'll have at least one of those back, the other is something you can't count on.

We can't count on the same number of meaningful turnovers we had last year. I know that.

yep. i'd venture to say the amount of turnovers we saw last year was probably the highest total ever for a GW defense.

Don't mess with this offense IMO. Like Lester said, I'd try for future picks for an impact LB. I think that's our best bet then cut some ST guy

The Raiders supposedly fielded offers from several teams for LB Thomas Howard, and didn't bite. Wouldn't be surprised if Saints were one of those teams.

Either of those would be terrible trades. You're not going to find equal value for a guy like Devery if you are focusing strictly on OLB (and Merriman isn't a 4-3 LB anyway).

With Merriman being unhappy with the Chargers and only being under contract for this year, I think Devery and a high-mid cond. pick would be plenty to get him. He has played 4-3 and 3-4 OLB, he was the top ranked OLB coming out of college I think. Derrick Johnson wouldn't be a bad trade, he has underperformed, but he is playing inside in a 3-4 when his natural position is outside. Both of their teams need WRs whereas Green Bay does not.

Merriman has never played 4-3 OLB and is incapable of doing such. He played DE in college and hasn't played with a hand down since. He has no place on our team.

+1

I don't understand people's fascination with trying to put a square peg in a round hole. This isn't Madden.
3-4 OLB =/= 4-3 OLB

Merriman is the #2 ranked OLB and is also ranked as a DE/DT.

•Strengths: Excellent athletic ability and has a 41-inch vertical leap; very fast; productive; has great strength; a terror rushing the passer off the edge; versatile and could play either LB or DE in the pros; has experience dropping into coverage; still has a huge upside. a 3-4 OLB still has to perform the same role as a WLB in a 4-3, but if we were talking about T Suggs then I would agree with you, but Merriman could play SLB for us while Shanle moves back to WLB if Casillas is seriously injured (knock on wood).

A 3-4 OLB is NOTHING like a WILL. They don't cover nearly as much ground in run/pass coverage. And you're suggesting trading our #2 WR, who is on the field on maybe 80% of our offensive plays, AND a mid/high draft pick for a guy you want to play at the SAM, one of the least important positions on defense. And that's ignoring that, again, he doesn't have the skillset to play the SAM. And THAT'S ignoring that he's absolutely sucked the past two years.

exactly, THRILL. I forwarded Suggs in trade but I do think he could be a straight DE. Didn't he even play some at DE last year?

Depends on the scheme. Clay Matthews, James Harrison, and Shawne Merriman are all 3-4 OLBs that will drop back in coverage just as a 4-3 OLB will, Demarcus Ware, Terrell Suggs, and Tamba Hali are all guys that almost every play are rushing the passer, filling a gap, or playing a very limited role in coverage. Merriman was hurt two seasons ago and last year didn't play that bad. Devery is our #2 for now, but Meachem looks as if he is ready to step up into that role.

yeah, they move Suggs around a bit in that defense, but Suggs has played extensively as a pure 4-3 DE in the pros and did so very well, which isn't something Merriman can say.

ETA: IIRC, they created a franchise tag that falls between the cost of a DE and a LB because of Suggs.
