Saints' defensive depth chart breakdown

LINK
The New Orleans Saints concluded their fifth practice of training camp Monday so it's time to take inventory of where things stand heading into Week 2 of workouts.
Please note, this a fluid situation. Players will rise and fall at certain spots as camp progresses and the coaching staff has more tape to evaluate. Deep positions like linebacker, cornerback, wide receiver and running back could look a little different each day as the staff works players with various units to give each player a fair evaluation.
As Saints coach Sean Payton likes to say, write some of these positions in pencil rather than pen as we move forward.
Here's my best guess at the three-deep depth chart on defense as it stands after five practices:
Defensive end
DE: Alex Okafor, Hau’oli Kikaha, Obum Gwacham
DE: Cameron Jordan, Darryl Tapp, Trey Hendrickson
Jordan is a lock on the left side and Okafor is getting the first shot to start on the right side, but that job is open. Kikaha, Hendrickson and fellow rookie Al-Quadin Muahhamad have all seen snaps with the first-team defense. This decision could go down to the wire.
Defensive tackle
DT: David Onyemata, Tyeler Davison, Justin Zimmer
DT: Sheldon Rankins, Tony McDaniel, Ashaad Mabry
Onyemata's ascension to the starting tackle spot opposite Rankins has been the revelation of camp for me. I knew the Saints were high on him, but I didn't expect him to vault past the more seasoned Davison so quickly. The Saints clearly want to give Onyemata as many reps as possible to accelerate his learning curve.
Linebacker
SLB: Manti Te’o, Nathan Stupar, Michael Mauti
MLB: A.J. Klein, Craig Robertson, Adam Bighill
WLB: Stephone Anthony, Alex Anzalone, Michael Mauti
Break out your pencils. Every position here is up in the air. Klein has the inside track to start in the middle and call the plays. It would be an upset if he doesn't win the job. But after that, both outside spots are up for grabs. This will be one of the most competitive position groups on the roster. Every player on the depth chart had a legitimate shot to make the team.
Cornerback
CB: Delvin Breaux, Sterling Moore, Ken Crawley
CB: P.J. Williams, Marshon Lattimore, De’Vante Harris
Another wide-open position. Breaux has a firm grip on one corner spot, but the other is up for grabs. Ideally, the Saints would like Lattimore to win the job so Williams could become the nickel back and work the slot. But the learning curve is steep for rookie corners in the NFL, and Lattimore will be brought along slowly until he shows he's ready for the starting job. Behind the top three, a heated competition for the remaining two or three jobs is taking place. Those battles will likely go down to final cuts and rank among the most difficult calls on the roster for the staff.
Safety
SS: Kenny Vaccaro, Rafael Bush, Erik Harris
FS: Vonn Bell, Marcus Williams, Chris Banjo
Not much competition here. Vaccaro and Bell are the clear starters, with Bush and Williams locked in at the reserve spots. The Saints are also high on Harris, who is seeing time in sub packages. Banjo is a strong special teams player, so the Saints have some good options here.

Might be a dumb question, but this is the guy we selected in like the 3rd round a couple years ago from Manitoba, right?

4th round. This is his 2nd year.
I assumed he was at least a 3 year project, & he seems to be developing ahead of schedule. Great news. I'm glad we got a new D-Line coach to coach up Rankins, Onyemata, & Davison. I guess we can forget about Onyemata playing DE now. Bad news for Ashaad Mabry & Justin Zimmer.
He's the guy that was about to be taken by Green Bay in the 4th, & his agent called us with the news(apparently GB did something to piss him off). We traded up in front of Green Bay to draft him. Pretty dirty & pretty funny.

I haven't heard Teo play anything but MLB idiuI doubt Harris is ahead of Swann.

The LB position is the biggest question mark by far. Ellerbe is gone & apparently Robertson isn't a lock to start. No clue what's going to happen here, but I'd put money on it that our top 7 LB's all make the team(barring injury)...Robertson, Klein, Te'o, Anthony, Anzalone, Stupar, Mauti. On paper, our depth looks just as good as our starters.
DT should be a 3 man rotation of Rankins, Onyemata, & Davison. McDaniel is a good backup to stuff the run if needed. Mabry & Zimmer would have to beat out McDaniel to make the team. We usually just keep 4 DT's.
I'd be surprised if Okafor doesn't win the DE job opposite Jordan. He's the most complete DE. The other guys are more situational pass rushers imo.
CB is hopefully a top 3 of Breaux, PJ Williams, & Lattimore(just need to stay healthy at this position). Depth of Sterling Moore, Crawley, Swann, Maulet, & DeVante Harris is nice to have.
Oddly enough...Safety looks like the most solid position on the defense. Starters & depth.

Yea, I think DeVante Harris is all practice squad this year.
I agree that he'll end up being behind both Swann(if healthy) & Maulet. No way he passes up Sterling Moore or Crawley either.

This is an article...not my opinion. I posted the link above. Jeff Duncan wrote it.

I don't think Anthony or Manti are starters.

Great share. Makes you realize that even with the bad injury luck, we are still better off than we were Week 1 last year by a long shot. We have some solid depth at every position. This post shows flashes of a former number 1 poster.

That explains a few things, especially the horrible title that says Anthony is down despite Jeff projecting him a starter.

Yea, I thought that was odd as well. Nothing like contradicting your title with your analysis.

Wait I just realized we have no special teams guys on our 53. So no kicker, punter or long snapper.
Posted on 8/3/17 at 11:16 am to Meateye
That's why I put the four on the chopping block to make way for ST.
Should've clarified that in my post
