Would I rather Smith, Vilma, & Harper for almost $19million or just go with Broughton, Chamberlain, & Bush for $2.5mil total. Methinks I could get a lot more out of that $17million.

His math is a net $18,830,000 for cutting all three. pretty staggering the more ya think about it.

Yes, it is. I'll give a pass to Loomis on these, but he has to a better job going forward or we're toast.

BTW: Everyone knew the Smith contract was out of whack when it was signed but it didn't matter too much because there's was plenty of money to throw around (no $20 mill a year Brees contract).

I looked back over your post and noticed you have Harper's $1.75 mil for both years counted but you did not include his $2.6 mil left in guarantees.

This would bring his savings before June 1st to only $1 mil(7.1-2.6-1.75-1.75=1) and the total savings for cutting all three now to just $14,758,334.

As I said in other threads(and I was wrong on Smith's number in those as I was just guessing) it still makes sense to cut Smith now because you save $7.75 mil now and even more after June 1st.

Harper would make no sense to cut now as cutting him for $1 mil is minimal savings and you won't get a better player for that price.

Not sure on his $2.6 breakdown, but assuming it's an even split you could save $4.05 mil come June 1st and it becomes more interesting whether you cut or keep him. Problem now is that all the good free agents are likely gone so it would have to be a draft pick that is showing some flashes.

Now if all of his guarantees are for this year you only save his bonus next year on top which brings the savings to $2.75($1 mil original + $1.75 2014 bonus). At that price I not sure if they cut him or not.

Now if his guarantees are all in this year and they keep him, next year you cut him and only owe $1.75 mil period. Given he's scheduled to make $7.9 mil next year they will save $6.15 mil by cutting him. In other words, next year he restructures or he is likely gone unless he plays his arse off this year.

Looking at this site:

LINK /

I'm pretty sure all his remaining guarantees are for this year as none of the $2.6 is listed in the dead money(they don't include the signing bonus in the figure if it's the player's last year).

What is the alternative without those three (Smith, Vilma, Harper)? It's not like they are game changers on defense. Would the Saints be that much worse on D without them? I love what they have contributed over the last few seasons but at this point needs outweigh loyalty.

We definitely have other LBs outside of Vilma. Right now I'd say Galette, Wilson, Lofton, and Hawthorne are all a better fit for the 3-4 and currently our likely starters even with Vilma.

For DE we have Jordan who has one spot locked down, and Hicks could possibly play some there as well as guys like Tom Johnson and Tyrunn Walker. But I see Hicks possibly spending some time at nose also and I couldn't say Johnson or Walker would be better than Smith.

Hicks' role may also depend on how well Bunkley plays the middle and if we hit on a NT in the draft or sign one in FA. So that all makes it harder to judge Smith but we do have some options.

For SS we have Bush but I don't think he's a better box safety than Harper, which is how Ryan uses his SS. Bush covers better but Harper is better every where else. IAQ is definitely a FS style safety and he has a better chance at starting over Jenkins than Harper.

There also isn't many box style safeties on the market(mostly free safeties with only a couple of those that could adapt) and the ones you'd say were better than Harper would probably cost too much or have the some problem as Harper(coverage liability).

So I'd say talent wise Vilma is the most cuttable and he'll save us $6 mil.

Smith is next and he'll save us $7.75 mil before June 1st and more after.

Harper is the hardest to replace unless we hit on someone in the draft or some big FA comes cheap and he would save us the least at $1 mil now and between $2.75 to $4 mil after June 1st depending on contract structuring.

Did you add in the Junior contract? It's 800,000 base salary this year(unsure on bonuses). Or were you waiting for that part also?

Also wanted to ask if this includes the Ivory and De La Puente deals too?

That would put us around $5 mil if not.

Gotcha. Yeah I forgot that they didn't actually sign the tenders yet. Can't find anything outside the base salaries for Galette(800,000 this year and 1.4 mil each of the next 2 years).
