Although his brilliant career was in Chicago we were graced in New Orleans by the presence of this monster DE when the Saints expanded the NFL. He transformed the position. Rest in Peace, sir.

His last play was a sack.

"Just showing 'em the old man can still do it."

Eta:After the 1966 season, Mr. Atkins demanded a trade. He spent his final three years with the New Orleans Saints. When he retired in 1969, his 205 games were an NFL record for a lineman. On the final play of his career, at age 39, his sack preserved a victory.

One of the greatest football players to ever play for the Saints. Guy was a beast.

Here's a link from the NY Times.

The early Saints teams had quite a few characters.

Atkins was one crazy dude and a great player.

Here is another link. I was a little kid when I got his autograph outside the locker room at Tulane stadium. He was massive.

RIP, big man!

on a side note, I hope that his family donates his body to the NFL, so they can study his brain too.

I also got his autograph in the 60's but don't really recall the meeting. I was a tike. Those old uni's were the best
