Mel Kiper ranks him the 8th best TE and a 5th round grade. If you're the Saints, do you take the former Riverside hoopstar and try strike lightning twice by taking a former basketball player but in the later rounds?

No. If/when he's a udfa I'd bring him in and see if we can develop him on the practice squad.

I'd use a 7th rounder on him. As long as we filled other positions of need first, I might take a chance on him in the 7th.

As a UDFA yeah! He hasn't played TE since HS, but if there is a threat that some team may draft him you may have to use a late round pick on him. A lot of raw untapped potential there.

As an undrafted FA. Jimmy Graham and Tony Gonzales played football in college and went to the combine. They were drafted. Antonio Gates did neither and was not. Garters did neither and shouldn't be drafted either.

I'd definitely take him in the 8th RD.

I'm wondering why he's not trying to make it as a d lineman. His brother was a great, natural d lineman. He's pushing 280 anyway and would make more money early on.

DL is a way tougher projection when looking at a guy who's never played.

I guess. There is the whole basketball-tight end phenomenon in the NFL as well. His measurables as a d lineman are really intriguing though.

Supposedly he has amazing hands. He's worth a late rounder for sure.

He would be a project his athletic ability and size would make him intriguing but should not even think about drafting him before the 6th round and may be a stretch. If he is available in the 7th I say it is worth a gamble.

The difference btwn a 6th and an UDFA is not that big. Many 6th rdrs don't make the team. If he was really good measurables and a good pro day than he is def worth a 6th.

From Ian Rapoport's twitter:

Baylor basketball player Rico Gathers has his pro day today at the #Saints facility & 24 teams sent representatives. Teams are intrigued.

I agree. I consider 3rd-5th mid round. 6th & 7th are basically reserved for punters/kickers and the guys that have more upside than the guys that don't get drafted. There are exceptions(Antonio Brown), but these guys are normally around the same level of talent as the top 60/70 UDFA's. It just takes one team to like really like one of your strengths.
