Even on PFF, you can see him go from red to green as the weeks went on in 2013.

I think most of the issues yesterday were with coaching. And i think Ryan will figure it out.

Or he won't and we'll watch a dead failing scheme all season and lose our fricking minds.

Either is possible at this point.

they can't do anything on their own. despite this, we continued to run 2 super deep safety packages. This should have been solved with 2 safeties back and a third safety in the nickle roll.
This is what I don't understand.

Last year, our secondary was good because they worked together as a unit.
Yesterday, we just decided to leave our corners on islands.
Why?

I thought he improved last year a lot.

but yesterday, the D-line as a whole didn't really set the tone like they did last year in the opener.

Hicks had a good game in both ATL games last year and made a meaningful plays with a sack or a big run stuff. So yeah, it was odd he didn't really do anything yesterday.

Which is really dumb when you're going up against Julio Jones

It falls back on Rob Ryan. He's the defensive coordinator.

Something PFF pointed out was that our pass rush yesterday wasn't THAT bad.

I mean, it wasn't good (especially compared to last season); but it wasn't as bad as our run defense or coverage.

The pass rush was there (sort of), but Ryan just avoided like crazy.
I honestly can't believe he pulled it off as much as he did.

The way Matt Ryan was moving I wouldn't be surprised if he's running a dog fighting ring

-I've looked at a lot of PFF stats, and this is honestly one of the worst graded units I've seen.
-Cam Jordan got a 0.0 overall score, which landed him third overall...that's disgraceful.

Completely agree.

Goes without being said, and let's hope this remains his worst performance as a Saint throughout the entirety of his career.

We know his potential. Simply needs to play better.

The guy played his arse off in the best game of his career. That's a fact.

The dline was in the backfield disrupting the pocket every play it seemed, the problem was that once the pocket folded there was no consequence. No LB there to rush in, no safties playing up to make him nervous. Every ball he threw seemed to hit the WR with no challenge then someone cam over the top to make a tackle.

The defensive scheme yesterday failed completely and there was no adjustment at halftime. It was infuriating.

've been saying all preseason, our CBs will be the main determinant in how far we go this season. If they don't turn that around, we're gonna be disappointed. I think it's possible, but they need a lot of work.

I agree that our CBs need to play better, but if we had any kind of pass rush then our CBs wouldn't look as bad. Look at Carolina, and the Giants of a few years back. Their pass rush is/was so good, that it didn't matter who was back there. While it's unreasonable to expect our pass rush to be as good as Carolina's, it's still is pretty damn good, and should be a lot better than yesterday.

Again, this is something else that Ryan did that reminded me of Spags.

Last season, Ryan was flexible as shite with his schemes.
Yesterday, we just kept doing what obviously wasn't working.

I really did not want to make or invite that comparison. But it sure as hell has been in the back of my mind.

Yesterday's defensive performance was very Spags-like.

Our Dline got to Ryan plenty, and made him move about. Unfortunately instead of making him uncomfortable and putting him off on throws Ryan thrived and played lights out. As the season goes on we will continue to get to the QB and we won't play QB's who are on fire every game. Hate on him all you like but Ryan is an upper echelon QB in the NFL, we won't play those that often this season.

Ryan only completed 2 maybe 3 throws that were in the air for over 20 yards. One of which PRob got beaten by Hester, kind of inexcusable. We were clearly preventing the deep ball, respecting White and Jones a great deal. Which was to the detriment of our Safeties, they weren't able to make plays like we were expecting and hoping for.

Our Corners aren't amazing, but they weren't as bad yesterday as people made them out to be. Quite often our Corners were right on top of the Receiver as he caught the ball, often times it was just a great throw and catch.

Rob Ryan will figure out how to help the Corners and get the Safeties involved. He will also figure out how to get more pressure on QB's. The most concerning issue is still the Run Defense, and our Linebacker play. Hawthorne is a black hole in every facet of the game, and none of our LB's can cover a Tight End or Running Back.

He had at least 6 missed tackles and was a non factor in any plays.

This. Scheme had nothing to do with those poor effort tackle "attempts". It was almost like everyone felt there was so much talent around them that they could play half-assed and somebody else would pick up the slack, only, nobody did.

Is that a negative for Ingram? How do they arrive at that?

If it's in white, then for all intents and purposes, it's average.

-.4 can't really be distinguished from +.2.
