Forgive my ignorance but even if stress fractures are hard to see, if the doctor diagnoses a patient with a contusion abd it is later discovered that it is a fracture wouldn't it still be a "misdiagnosis"?

Misdiagnosis carries with it an implication that there was apparent evidence to make the correct diagnosis. Stress changes often aren't apparent on the first image.

I'm not picking a side and blaming anyone, my post was about the press release from Ochsner. They admit that Stress Fractures are hard to see and often missed and then claim that their doctors did not "Misdiagnose" the player.

My argument is that regardless of how common this type of injury is missed, calling it a contusion when it was later discovered to be a fracture is in fact a "Misdiagnosis".

Had Ochsner said that their doctors followed protocol and acted in the best possible way with th information they had, I would be fine with it. But they are trying to say that their doctors didn't misdiagnose Breaux when they clearly did. The argument that this type of injury is often hard to see and missed does not change the fact that they misdiagnosed him.

misdiagnosis (mis'·di·g·no?·sis),
n an inaccurate assessment of a patient's condition. Harm may be inflicted on the patient as the result of an incorrect therapeutic approach.

This is the definition I found on an online medical dictionary, It does not say anything about evidence.

Like I said before, If they admitted to the misdiagnosis and then supported their doctors by saying that this type of injury is hard to see and often missed then I would be 100% on board with that explanation. Their explanation is a cop out.

Actually a hundred percent accurate statement. And I've been in radiology for over 15 years. Specifically CAT scan.

This may be true... but I am trying to recall one single instance in all of professional sports where there was a "X-rays are negative " with regard to a fracture only to have that reversed 10 days later.

Sure, I've seen some X-rays negative but MRI is scheduled in a day or two type things where the MRI revealed something. But I've never seen a professional athlete receive a prognosis only to change like this dramatically 10 days later.
