7. New Orleans Saints
The Pick: QB Deshaun Watson, Clemson
Where do we even start with this team?
The New Orleans Saints have big names and big salaries across the depth chart, but the on-field performance is once again down despite having a Hall of Fame quarterback, two very good wide receivers and building blocks at left tackle, defensive line, linebacker and in the secondary. Some of the issues are no doubt due to injuries, but this roster is ill suited for the future.
That's where Deshaun Watson comes in. Look at what Dallas did in drafting Dak Prescott and you get an idea of how important it is to support an aging quarterback with a viable replacement. Garrett Grayson was thought by some to be that guy, but the former third-rounder has been relegated to practice squad duties. Now is the time for a "starter in waiting" pick.
Watson is an electric passer who is an exceptional fit for Sean Payton's offense. He can air it out down the field or pick up chunk plays on crossing and combination routes. Watson is also a talented runner and can easily execute the rollouts and play actions Brees has been so good at for the Saints.

Don't give a frick how old Brees is. We need help on defense. Draft only defensive players, particularly in the front 7. I'll vomit in my fricking mouth if our first pick is drafting a damn QB.

Watson has been underwhelming this year

I'd love Adams, Allen or Barnett

He's doing pretty good tonight against the best defense in college football.

Yeah man

A league source tells us that the Saints have decided to bench quarterback Aaron Brooks. Todd Bouman will start in his place on Sunday against the Panthers. We're told that it was a coaching decision only, and that the move has nothing to do with Brooks' recent criticism of owner Tom Benson.

Drew Brees was a dual threat in college

Thoughts? They make little sense.

I've been against using a high pick to find our future QB, but that was under the impression that we'd extend Brees for longer than one season. I'd be OK with this move. I'd also be OK (or even prefer) getting a guy like Barnett with a top 10 pick and extending Brees.
Here's why I'd prefer the latter (besides thinking that Brees has 2 more great seasons left and another 2 really good ones): if we draft poorly and make bad FA decisions over the next ~3 years, then we'll get a top 3 (maybe the #1) pick in year 2 post Brees. If we draft well and make good FA decisions, then we probably will be in that 10-15 range in year 2 post Brees, but that means we were competing in Brees's final years, so it was worth extending him.
I still think that, if we can stay healthy on defense, maybe extend Fairley (though I like Onyemata a lot, so probably not worth it), then I think we're an average RDE away from having an average defense. If we hit on a young DE, then we could be a top 10 defense. I REALLY like the rest of the DL, I like our CBs when healthy, and KV + Bell should be OK enough. A good DL and secondary would more than make up for subpar LBs (which I consider to be the least important position on defense).
And speaking of the DL, I think poor play from that RDE position is really hurting the rest of the DL. Fairley, Cam, and Davison are really playing well. But being able wash out the RDE with just the LT really fricks us. That's supposed to be the position that you consider keeping a RB in pass protection to help out with, but that's not happening with Kruger (whom I do expect to improve) and Edebali.

I kinda like Brad Kaaya from Miami over Watson. Tall and rangy , very accurate and intelligent.
Unfortunately he can't rush the passer. That's what we desperately need on the defense. Brees has still got a couple of years in him. We need a game changing pass rusher.

Kaaya has a good chance of going #1. Unless Brees gets hurt soon, or Kaaya's performance falls off a cliff, we don't stand a chance of drafting him.

Best defensive player avaliable in rounds 1-3.

Yes I know he was originally projected later 1st round but I'm sure he is steadily moving up. All the more reason to look for a def. stud.

These always perplex me. Look at Denver and now even Minnesota. Brees aside, Build up your defense and you can win with a halfway competent QB. It's ridiculous to use a high draft pick on a project QB that may or may not even see the field

I think I could get on the Pathetic for Peppers train

I'm worried that KV hitting the FA market will get top dollar.
A team with a known defense and a known defensive coaching staff will I think see a lot to like in KV.
We will see.
