best places to stay?

I guess "best" could get you all kind of answers.
On Poydras not far from the dome is a Le Pavillion(sp) and one of the Hilton Brands(I think Homewood Suites). Just look at the Hilton website to get correct information.
At the food of Poydras near the river is Loewes, W Hotel, Harrahs, etc. All pretty good places.
If you are going after October, the Hyatt next to the dome should be open.

Stay at the Hilton Riverside. Its way down Poydras but its not that bad of a walk. Plus you're close to Harrahs, the French Quarter, etc. And you could eat Drago's

Within easy walking distance to the dome, you can't beat the Drury Inn on Poydras.
Free breakfast and on site parking.

Renaissance on Tchoupitoulas. Its a decent walk to the Dome, but across the street from Lucy's

Do not stay in Metairie, I always feel like I will get raped anywhere I stay out there.

If you are from out of town (even Baton Rouge/Layfayette), most people who come to New Orleans usually will check out the French Quarter/Bourbon St after the game while they have the opportunity on the visit.
Even if they intend to just have a drink or a meal, time can fly, and one drink leads to the next, and next thing you know, they are wishing they could've just walked a block or two back to their French Quarter hotel.
So stay in the Quarter, and while you are sober, catch a $5 cab to the game, or just walk the easy one mile there.
You are just at the game for roughly 4 hours, but are in New Orleans for at least a day & night, so stay where the rest of the action is, the French Quarter.

Here are some Hotels from Kayak for 2 guests/one room/one night the Chicago game Sept 8th, for example. (Change the date to whatever game you are attending.)
For location, on the left hand side of the Kayak link is a map. Click on it, and scroll your mouse over the flagged hotels, and it will show you the name of each hotel & its price.
If price is the main concern, don't click on the map, just sort the drop down menu and change it to "Price: low to high". There are rooms on the Chicago gameday as low as $44, but most of the Quarter Hotels are right at $100.

The Hyatt will be open this fall. They are accepting reservations for anything from Oct. 19, 2011 onwards.
