Still, that doesn't mean the Saints are done throwing to the tight end, as made clear by Payton's consistent offseason praise for young target Josh Hill. Entering his third season, the 6-foot-5, 250-pounder "certainly" will see "more snaps" because of Graham's departure, per Payton, who clarified that Hill is set up to play off the line as the team's "F" target.
The Saints bypassed drafting competition at the position because Payton assured scouts that Hill's measurables were superior to anything coming out of the college ranks, saying: "You look at a 38-inch vertical jump, he's an 11 broad (jump), three-cone, whatever. And the comparables to the top tight ends in the draft a year ago, I said, 'In every category this guy's better.'"
Game Rewind suggests that Hill is a strong fit for how Payton uses his pass-catching tight ends, with the coach calling him "exactly what we're looking for." He's an impressive athlete, something we saw right away last preseason, as Hill wound his way through a laundry list of Rams defenders for after-the-catch real estate:

There's a couple of highlight videos in the linked page.

Shipping away the most talented player on the offense next to Drew Brees irritated the team's quarterback and left fans wondering if the franchise was ready to shred the roster into pieces.

We have 2 pro bowlers on roster and 2 future pro bowlers ready to own the league after Watson retires and JHill wants WR money

"Game Rewind suggests that Hill is a strong fit for how Payton uses his pass-catching tight ends"

Even though they are talking about pre-season, I "Game-rewound" every single Hill catch and target from the regular season the other day.

Not his fault, but almost each TD was a set up play by using decoys. 2 of them were play action wide open little out routes to the right as he was a blocker vs Chicago (same play actually).

One was a deep ball with absolutely no one near him from horrible coverage vs. Minn (granted it was a well designed play).

One vs. Dallas when we were down 31-3. Same little play action out right to the right underneath, started as a blocker. He actually showed pretty good speed in this one to get to the pylon beating the line backers.

Can't remember the last.

But just about every catch he started in the backfield or behind the tackle as a blocker. Some type of mis direction. A short underneath route to him.

What I struggle with, and what concerns me is with how talented Payton makes him out to be, why didn't we see more instances of him lining up in the slot, or more Jimmy -esque routes, especially once Cooks went down.

I'm not an OC, nor am I saying he will suck. But that's where my concerns come from and why I'm not as bullish on him as others are.

Well we did have Jimmy so I don't think its weird we wouldn't feature the back up more. To me it depends on what your expectations are for Hill. I don't think Payton expects Hill to be Jimmy. If he was comparing him to Jimmy then that would make me skeptical. I think Payton just believes that Hill is just as talented or can at least be as productive as the TE's that just came out. I don't think that is a stretch. Payton has seen a lot more of Hill than we have and if he believes Hill is capable then I'll take his word on it.

And sad because it doesn't even make any sense. Nobody on here has said they thought Watson was going to be the next Jimmy Graham or anything. At least as far as I know of. I don't even think Watson's roll changes at all. Hill's roll however will change and I think he will get way more targets than Watson.

If you graded Ben compared to all the other TE's I would give him a solid B.

The fact that CSP didn't reach for a TE in the draft or a mid to high tier TE in free agency says more about Hill than any of us could ever say. Now he just has to prove it.

Bingo. Even if hill is half of graham I'm fine with that. I'm just glad I won't be seeing drew force the ball into triple coverage to graham anymore when other people are open.

It ain't sad, its an opinion. Very good to have those on a message board, can't just always wear black and gold sunglasses and hope everyone plays Grrrrrreaaaat.

Watson has been a solid veteran backup for us and for a fan to not think that he's all of a sudden going to become this big offensive threat for us is a fair perspective. Maybe his production and talent surprises many of us this year but he's old, loves jesus, and hasn't been anything that impressive post catch for us. I kind of side with Lester on the Watson doubt. I don't think he'll be "bad" but i sure am hoping Hill becomes the more explosive TE for us cause it think we'll need it. Possible we're wrong... but hey, we have opinions that we're voicing.

It all started when I posted that "don't sleep on Watson" OTA article. Lester was annoyed at the lack of reporting and has been anti-Watson ever since, even though the article, or me for that matter, never indicated that Watson was going to be the #1.

I think we've been making watson chatter even before OTA's. There was a bunch of "Watson is so great" chatter fluff pieces and even comments by drew and payton and all that just fueled our fires. But, that wasn't the start or cause of our opinions... at least for me but i think i also remember lester making comments previously.

Not agreed

They have been looking to Watson too much in practices to say Hill with get "way" more targets. Although it is still early and that could change. There has been nothing to indicate to me that Hill will be the number one TE.

No, he won't. Id like for him to, but Watson is very solid and a vet and is just really better right now, I still think Hill will start eventually, but more like next year with a lot of playing time this year.

Like a Ertz/Celek relationship

Umm What the hell are you talking about?

I think Watson will stay the same Watson he has been. That was the point of my post.

You agreed with sicboy that lester is bashing and added that its sad. If you think Watson will remain a 19 catch Saint when he's the heir apparent to Jimmy Graham, then you concur with me and lester.

I'll go on record saying he'll have a 30+ catch year.
