Not the same

Exactly.

Dude will get a lot of reps, but that won't be his final position this year.

Nothing like having a 32 year old 6'3" 280lb rush LB. inb4JarvisJones

This is the dumbest thing. When you put him on the field, you're signalling who one of the rushers are, which sort of defeats the purpose of a 3-4.

Lol at how little some know about these defenses. Saban, Hoodie, Ryan and all other 3-4 defenses love bringing in oversized OLBs and putting them in two-point stances on the LOS in obvious run downs. It essentially gives you a 4 man front and a better force player especially over the TE.

The Saints are just seeing if Smith is comfortable with his hand off the ground, that's all this is. We had this exact thread a week ago, and I said just this. Now someone tweets it and you think it's idiotic even though every 3-4 defense does it?

It's an idiotic idea to never have him covering (which Garic was suggesting).

No it's not. There's a time and place to get creative in any defense including the 3-4. Sure it's fun to get exotic, but at the end of the day if the offense is BIB mauling your SDE and then smashing out your OLB the times of getting cute are out the window.

Smith will be brought in on situations where there's zero intent to hide his responsibility as a force player on the edge.

I guess the next question would be "Why hang on to such a limited player?"

Because Loomis is able to deceive CSP and the owner 'Benson of San Antonio' into poor draft pics and def schemes.

Duh.

Depending on our ability to stop the run he could play ~15% of defensive snaps, not a complete waste. The NFL is moving to a specialized era of personnel on offense, defenses are just reacting.

Also, I don't follow the financial stuff really at all, but don't we take a monster hit if we cut Smith?

I believe so.

But do we HAVE to play him at all?
I know it's unusual to bench your highest-paid players.

Smith hasn't been a "force" at anything besides hot dog eating contests since 2009.

Bingo!

And If Smith were to make the team as a OLB that would sadly say alot about the quality of OLB'ers on our team

Unless it's for certain personnel groupings.

Or let's say you have some formations with only one or two men with their hand on the ground?

If anything this lends credence to the theory that our defense will be an amoeba this year.
