And, from the looks of this board, most of you are learning/hearing of this for the first time. This was our 2006 preseason schedule. After that Dallas game, I was incredibly pessimistic about how the season would turn out. But, guess what? I turned out to be a fantastic season.

Bottom line - Stop putting so much stock into preseason games because they mean NOTHING.

If anything, I am optimistic on the defense being a more capable unit now that fat slob Rob isn't getting chili dog stains on the playcalling sheet.

And also you take away Brees and it's hard to get a good grasp on this team. Brees as QB would have marched them down the field serveral times had he played more. He and Cooks are going to have a special year.

I don't care if the game is won or not.

Preseason is to examine those first few drives where the starters are in and after that, individual back up performances for guys trying to make the team.

The defense was extremely encouraging last night and Thomas shows why he will be special. Other than the Ingram fumble, the offense was moving the ball well.

It is what you expected of a first preseason game.

I dont think anyone is disappointed in the overall performance from last night. I think most people are pleased with the defense even thought the pats were without Brady and Gronk

I was very happy with 1st team defense and also think the offense will click if the line stays together.

Last year's 1st team defense in the preseason was a shite show and translated quite well into the regular season. I hope the same holds true this season with what I was last night.

Clark: I see us working waiver wire for O-line help.

Our offense looked stellar with Drew on the field. A fumble by ingram which doesnt reflect on a single other player, doesnt chnage my opinion on that.

The defense looks really good when it was fully loaded as well. Not to mention the guys that didn't even dress out.

If you look at what really matters for this year, I kinda felt good coming out of last nights game.

Well, they mean plenty, but only if you know what you're looking at.

I was encouraged by what I saw out of the pass rush, but I'll hold off more optimism until later. Outside of their o-line, our
D was basically playing against New England's 2nd string.

Biggest reason for optimism: McCown and/or Grayson will not see a snap this year unless the game is already won or it is meaningless.

The only thing they won in 2006 was their division.

Here's the thing.

People freak out about preseason games due to the recency effect, which states that we remember and react to the most recent information.

In preseason games, (less informed) fans react to the second half of the games, where the teams looks like shite and the players seem terrible.
But of course they do! They're third stringers and guys who won't even make the team!

If you felt good about the first quarter, that's all you need think about for the future.

Yarp.

It hasn't been talked about, but Fleener played into Q2 and didn't have a catch IIRC. Brees only threw one pass, and Fleener was in and out of the game, but that's a slight concern.

The defensive players that will actually play were, for the most part, very good. Ditto for the offense outside of Peat. Any realistic, competent Saints fan should be happy about last night.

He caught a pretty high pass along the sideline from Grayson. I'm not worried about him though. I'm just happy Drew got a drive to get SOME type of work. I'm withholding judgment on our line until I see Peat moved to Guard when Armstead suits up. Defensively, the line with the 1st unit got consistent pressure. The LB's looked much faster; doesn't a healthy Ellerbe make all the difference? The secondary will surprise this season.
