quote:

On Saturday nights during the 2009 NFL season, Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, the lightning-rod leader of a feisty unit, would stand in front of his men holding white envelopes filled with cash—bonuses for their performances the previous week. As Williams called up player after player, handing them envelopes with amounts ranging from $100 for a special teams tackle inside the opponents' 20-yard line to $1,500 for knocking a foe out of the game, a chant would rise up from the fired-up defenders:

"Give it back! Give it back! Give it back!"

Many players would do just that, to beef up the pot and make the stakes bigger as the season went on. The NFL alleges that by the time New Orleans reached the NFC Championship Game against the Vikings on Jan. 24, 2010, the stakes had risen to the point that middle linebacker and defensive captain Jonathan Vilma personally offered a $10,000 bounty to any player who knocked Minnesota quarterback Brett Favre out of the game. (SI's attempts to reach Vilma were unsuccessful.)

I cant read anymore details about this shite. The fact that the NFC Championship bounty was like 50,000 was stupid enough. Now we find out it was an accumulation of the whole season's money. That is chump change for these guys. This whole situation is blown so stupidly out of proportion and the media and the NFL are trying to scapegoat the Saints.

Like Joe Horn said - The Saints shouldnt be penalized until every team in the NFL is investigated. The way to fix the big hit problem is already in place with refs and guys on the sidelines who look for big hits and helmet to helmet hits and fine the players responsible.

Maybe the president can make a speech about it one day this week.

They already moved the opening game so it wouldnt conflict with his DNC speech. I wouldn't be surprised if he held a press conference about it. He has done stupider shite.

Worth it for a Superbowl, IMHO.

Only ones screaming out championship is tainted are the ones who never won it

Yup. The reason they picked the Saints is because we are Superbowl Champions and for a while we were media darlings. Everyone loves to see a good story go bad. I'm all for next season taking the villain role and beating the shite out of opposing offenses. If they want to paint us as vicious hitting madmen then i say we were all black jerseys every game and go full throttle into our role.

The ONLY way this board couldbecome any less bearable would be to introduce politics into the equation. Please shut the hell up with this stupid bullshite.

I just meant the media has blown this so out of proportion i wouldn't be suprised if the president made a speech about it. It wouldnt be the first time he pissed me off NFL-wise. I didnt want/ intend/ hope to start a political argument.

Peter King is leading the charge of media gone full retard on this.

I said yesterday I havent read MMQB since his explanation of why he voted Rodgers over Brees for MVP. I will never, ever read his articles anymore after this nonsense.

Wow. So the Saint's knew they couldn't just play the game to win, they had to take out the leader of the better team. Shameful way to win a game, but I guess when you are a desperate franchise like the Saints you have to do whatever you can to win.

Analysts and Sportscaster talk all the time about the way to disrupt a QB is to get pressure on him and hit him. Now they've turned into huge hypocrites.

Which is legit, just like getting physical with a WR. But the Saints were simply trying to prevent Favre from finishing the game at full health. Good move obviously.
