I can't tell if this is a bad pick.
Maybe y'all can explain.

I thought we drafted VB to replace Byrd.
So why did we draft another FS high?

I've never seen a team draft so many freaking top round safeties.

quote:

Bottom Line
Ball-hawking free safety who has outstanding ball skills and has shown a propensity for causing turnovers. He can play from a high centerfield spot and utilizes his instincts to swoop down and challenge throws. He's able to get running backs down, but he's not physical enough to be a combination safety. NFL teams love defensive backs with athletic traits, instincts and ball skills. If he works out well before the draft, he should move up team boards.

Are you sure?

Regardless, I'm of the belief that you build a defense front to back, and not vice versa.

I hope those three can cover forever because that's what quarterbacks have against us.

Saints are widely known to have injury problems in the defensive backfield.... and spending a pick on a player who could play safety or corner.... I like it esp with swann's injury problems and lattimores past injuries

He'll play SS and Nickel coverage. We'll keep him near the LOS hopefully.

Really frees him up actually to where he can be placed where he's most disruptive.

Lattimore, Breaux, Vaccaro, Bell, Williams, and Williams/Swann/Moore

We need depth at safety because they're always hurt. I was hoping Adams would fall to us at 6. I don't hate this pick, but I would have preferred a pass-rusher. I guess they really like Kikaha

In a perfect world sure.

But if the value in front is perceived to be significantly less you take what you can get.

A crazy veteran FS and two young corners pretty much carried our defense in 2009 throughout much of the regular season.

Cam Jordan
Fairley
Rankins

All should be very good at generating pressure for their position. Okafor is already a huge improvement across from Cam, and hopefully Kikaha can come back healthy (he's participating in OTAs).
David Onyemata showed some potential here last year too.

I still think it's a huge need, but pass rush isn't near a black hole as some are making it out to be.

Also, having a top notch secondary allows you to blitz more to generate pressure. See Arizona before Chandler Jones

I appreciate the responses.

But doesn't anyone else think we draft safeties like it's going out of style?

I think the coaches/front office just aren't convinced Bell can be a full time starter in the NFL. Sucks because we used a high pick on him and also not claiming he can't be, but I just feel that they're not ready to name him the full time guy.

Bell is more of a nickel type safety not a true free safety mold type
