When I was a kid football was a fierce competition between the most athletic people in the country and it brought together people of all races and backgrounds and classes to cheer on their team.

One of my earliest memories is watching a saints game with my grandfather.

I drank my first beer with my dad watching a saints game.

I used to tailgate with people of all races and classes together barbecueing and drinking and discussing the team. We never mentioned politics or bullshite we just got along and enjoyed each other’s company.

Football got me through some dark times after Katrina because we had something to cheer for. Something to take your mind off the everyday stresses of life.

I had my first date with my now wife at a saints game.

I waited on the waiting list for over 10 years to get season tickets when I could finally afford them.

I’ve been a diehard football fan as long as I can remember and three years ago when I had my son I dreamed about how awesome it would be to share a beer with him at a game.
Not every single aspect of life has to be a nonstop political theater message. Sometimes we just need an escape.

Football was that escape. A competition where only skill mattered. Nothing else. The best of the best compete and we gather together to cheer them on. But now it’s perverted into some kind of propaganda outlet for the political elite.

It’s just depressing.

It’s very sad but I’m done...at least until the tail quits wagging the dog.

I grew up a HUGE Saints fan, but my fav player was Dan Marino. I loved watching Dan battle back from adversity constantly. That’s what it was about. Same with the Saints. We could never beat San Fran. Montana and Rice would always find a way, but when we did beat them, it was glorious. That’s all that mattered at the time. No politics, racist shite, BLM, etc. I miss the old days.

Have to hit the NFL in the wallet.

When ESPN started seeing viewers flock away a few years ago they got the message , more people want sports and politics separate.

No. Brees kind of fricked is up pretty good then his teammates’ reactionary social media posts made it worse. Everything seems cool now, so I’m sure it’ll mostly be forgotten by the time the season starts. As to the political thing, I wish we could separate sports from politics but in this day and age it’s just something that doesn’t happen.

Breesus, I had a gut feeling when Jimmy Graham left, that Drew and CSP orchestrated him out of New Orleans.

It was a good decision. Jog your memory. Was Malcolm Jenkins the kind of personality that Drew did not want in the locker room?

Was there ever personal animosity between them?

I know Jenkins seems insanely passionate about his cause; but could there be another reason for his over the top attack.

I have felt sad as well. My dad died right as the 2009 season began. I felt him at my side each game.

When the Saints won it all, I openly spoke to my dad and balled like a little kid.

The Goodell shaft job has really sucked; but this chapter in the destruction of Brees and the Saints is a sickening gut punch.

It still can be if you have enough self discipline to block out all the nonsense. If not I guess it’s time to grow up and move on.

Depressed is a good way to put it.

My ride or die mentality this season has taken a hit. I'm usually pretty good with recovery but at the moment I dont really want to think too much about the season.

Checking here is more out of habit on one of my favorite sites since I was 15 years old.

IDK how to feel about everything. I just hate one of the GOATs was turned into a mark to make a SJW point then turned into a conservative punching bag.

I feel very similar to you. It all meant more to me than it probably should have but I loved it. Think it was actually the 2nd date for Mrs. Brews and I, and I also planned on taking little ones one day. Already paid for em for this season so I got a year to think about it.

Part of me wants to be done with it but I’ve also been thinking that this whole thing is bigger than a few a-hole teammates. All those memories you talked about matter too, maybe you shouldn’t let those fall by the wayside because of them. You can hope Mike Thomas has a great game and just accept the fact that he’s a douche. Make it about the Saints and what they represent to all of us. That’s how I’m trying to look at it at least.

If it continues to get worse, then just say frick it. Really hope it doesn’t tho.

You’re right, but I think that’s what made this fan base special. I celebrated and had conversations with ppl I’m not sure I would have crossed paths with if not for the Saints. Seemed like the last thing that would ever become a divisive topic, but it has.

How? I’m legitimately curious.

It starts every game, it’s talked about in every news outlet, it’s brought up by every commentator, it’s on every players social media presence, etc...

How can you watch a game or keep up with the team and block it out?

Nah. It’s just a game. And there are no heroes, just athletes. Brees is one of the great qbs. And if he wants to get on his knees in the locker room and massage the feet of Mike Thomas and Malcolm Jenkins that’s on him. I don’t care if they don’t win another game. Much more important things.

I agree with everything you said but I’d like to add that at this point, I’m just numb. That’s the only way to describe it

When the no call happened, it brought a lot of things into perspective. Last year, I tried my best, but it just didn’t feel right. Now, with all this nonsense spilling over into the nfl worse than it ever has before..... I don’t know. I just can’t take it anymore

Not sure how this season will play out for me, so I won’t say ‘I’m done’, but man, I just can’t see me giving too much of a frick

Depressed is right. I feel like someone has died. I realize an old friend (the Saints) are gone as I knew them. No clothes, no clocks, no coke bottles, no helmets no Saints stuff at all for me, No NFL ticket and no trip to Charlotte to see them, they aren't getting a dime from me. The teammates attacking Drew publicly was horrible, I will never cheer for them again, but The biggest part for me is , the front office and the head coach didn't have Drew's back at all, nothing. And the politics... No NFL, screw them, I'll have productive Sundays in the fall and winter now.

Just dont let it offend you, skip the pregame if you have to. Watch it at a bar with other people. The politics of it only bother you if you let it

Exactly. Heroes are admired. But when you see Brees as a weak sell out, what’s is there left to be admired? Even if he throws for 350yds, 4TDs, and wins the game, it’s in the back of your mind of what he did. And you will not respect yourself, consciously or subconsciously, for watching and supporting him.

Yes. I’m depressed. I fully comprehend that change is inevitable as we journey through the human experience. Evolution is a certainty in all endeavors; Politics being one of many of them. Entertainment isn’t immune to evolution by any means. And that’s what sports are. Entertainment. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s all about how we prepare and react towards these changes and the NFL as an organization have been masters at it. The marketing and branding of the NFL is nothing short of astounding. I submit no matter what level of political infusion becomes immersed with the NFL, it’s popularity will only grow because the game is sacred and the masses have bought in for generations. This situation will evolve and we all, being loyalists, will find ourselves watching the games with family and friends from kickoff to final whistle. Because in the end, it’s only a game.
