"The Saints seem to have found themselves a kicker in Lutz. Despite being a rookie, Lutz performed like a steady veteran, making 28 of 34 field-goal attempts. Bear in mind that four of those misses were from 50 yards or more. His only errant extra point was that now famous block against the Broncos. Otherwise, Lutz was perfect."

No more kicking carousel

Gotta give Payton credit on that one. Letting Hopkins go stung but Lutz kicked very well last year

And we didn't have to draft him in the 2nd round.

I'll give him 28 of 33 and leave off that 61 yard prayer against the Raiders.

Didn't he miss that wide by like 3 yards?

There are currently 4 starting kickers in the league under the age of 25. While it is better that he made the "team" than not this isn't exactly a huge indication of future success. He didn't have to beat out a bunch of other up and coming players at kicker. It's just that they had to pick someone at the position.

But he single handedly kept us out of the playoffs. It's one thing to miss it. Another to have 3 huge point swings in close games. We were three returned block kicks from 10-6

See now that's funny, because you're actually seriously blaming him for the failure of the entire special teams.

Appreciate that humor

I thought you blamed MT for Denver?

1 of the blocks was 100% not his fault. They allowed the guy to jump the center (broncos).

Another was maybe 50/50 as Peat missed his assignment and let his guy in with a hand up (giants).

The panthers block? Yeah that was 100% him.

But he didn't miss a kick from that point on and was 28 of 32 (87.5%) inside 50, and 28 of 33 (85%) inside 60.

His arrow is pointing up.

Yea, the Giants one could have been higher, but the guy was also way into the backfield with his hand up

The special teams unit as a whole failed last season. The progression of Lutz was the bright spot

I think he's got potential for a long and prosperous career. The problem wasn't just the 3 kicks that were blocked. He made like 2 or 3 that were tipped and half of the others were barely getting over the line. I was nervous for every kick last year. I'm sure he will figure it out

Now that's a fair response.

Yeah he got it figured out when they brought in help on the special teams during the season.

And that was early in the season. Once we brought in that "kicking specialist" he didn't miss a kick and they got higher.
