If Vernon Hargreaves falls to us do we take him?

After being consistently mocked for months between #6 and #9, a number of mock drafts now have Hargreaves falling past #12 due to his lack of elite speed and height. Do we take him if falls to us?

quote:

Vernon Hargreaves would be a godsend for a Saints defensive backfield in need of stability. Nobody knows when New Orleans native Keenan Lewis will be healthy enough to return to regular appearances, and second-year draft picks Damian Swann (concussion) and P.J. Williams (hamstring) are also coming off of injuries. Even after Delvin Breaux’s timely appearance as a top-five cornerback in the NFL and the re-signing of solid nickel corner Kyle Wilson, there’s a visible need at corner in 2016 and beyond. If available at their pick, Hargreaves could very likely be the answer the Saints are looking for.

I wouldn't be mad. We could use a CB. Would definitely put it as a higher need than S, but not higher than DT or G

The Saints have two starters and depth at the CB position. If he's the best player available they may take him but I doubt it. They have bigger issues at other positions

Not interested. We have enough guys that look like they'll be Servicable or even good nickel players, and I don't trust his size outside.

Plus, CB isn't even close to a big enough need. I'd be disappointed with any DB except Ramsey.

Well that's a silly statement.

It's a passing league

which requires more than just a bunch of corners.

still have one of the worst DL in the league.

I hear ya. But if he becomes BPA and you are reaching on a DT, it's silly not to shore up the secondary

We have Lewis who is frequently gimpy and aging fast and Swann who has had a series of significant head injuries. We have Wilson, Breaux, and an unknown in Williams. I am not saying CB is a top need, but we are also not far removed from it being a very thin position. There was a reason why we kept throwing Browner out there.

CB is absolutely a need. Anyone complaining about adding a player as talented as VH3 is crazy. The is a deep dline draft and a good DT can be found in the second round

If, and it's a big if, we have all our CBs healthy next year, then we should actually be fine there. But I wouldn't be against the Saints picking a CB, especially someone like Vernon Hargreaves or MacKensie Alexander

I agree that it is absolutely a gamble to hope for health at CB. We do have good players but we are banking on a few things happening for them to be good as a unit, namely health and PJ Williams playing to his potential. I get that.

But, the difference between that and our other needs, are that we are basically completely talent devoid there. We do not have anyone who has any chance of being even moderately above average at guard. Same at DT (Fairley aside, 1 year deal), and DE opposite Jordan. There is no one in there who could be healthy and improve that position, or who has explosive upside. It is either add improved players there, or we are bad. Black and white. It's much more grey for corner. I do mostly proscribe to the BPA approach but Logic tells you that SOMEONE worthy of 12 at a position we need a lot more will be there (like Rankins or Lawson).

Basically, I'd rather gamble on health at CB and improve a different position where we have nothing to gamble with.

CB is a need, but not a 1st Rd need. Pass on him, take one later.

Id rather William Jackson anyway

Yeah with the unknown health of swann and Lewis, unknown pj Williams, and chances of Breaux not improving... Silly not to. I'm just saying I rather one of the dt/de projected

This draft is deep on the DL. If you think Hargreaves is a lockdown corner then you can take him in the first and get Butler or Jones or Ogbah in the 2nd round. I'd be ok with it.

If I knew Lewis would stay healthy then I'd say 'yea, we can pass on this guy'.

The fact is that the Saints have needs everywhere on defense, everywhere, including corner, because Lewis has been extremely injury prone. Load up on defensive players.

Yes, CB is a need, and DL is a deep position.

Without a pass rush, our corners will be eaten up no matter how good they are. Reference: New Orleans Saints Defense 2012-2015
