Statistically, yeah. Who's arguing this?

he is not even CLOSE to sniffing the plane that Winston is on when it comes to being a passer.

I realize there is more the judging a QB than stats, but the other poster is saying that Mariota isn't close to sniffing the plane that Winston is on as a passer. I don't know what argument you can have to make the statement that Winston is a far superior passer than Mariota, especially when their stats are so lopsided in Mariota's favor.

quote:

Mariota is having a better season because he's in a system that is much more conducive to gaudy QB success.

Maybe Oregon's system is tailored more towards QB (although I'd like to know why you think that, as opposed to this just being a thrown-out-there statement), but that certainly isn't the sole reason that Mariota is having a greater season than Winston. Winston had a better season last year than this year, does that mean last year FSU had a different system that allowed him to play better?

I do however favor Winston more at the NFL level.

Although I disagree, that's certainly fine, I just don't see how the other poster can say that Winston is a much better pass that they aren't even on the same plane. That's just ridiculous.

Because Oregon runs the spread, which is a perfect system for Mariota's skill-set. I'm not faulting him, or Oregon for this. I mean, why wouldn't you try to maximize a player's skills, especially when they're elite for the level you're at. I've watched a few Oregon games this year and it just seems like every time Mariota is throwing touchdowns to wide open receivers. It happened against MSU, Arizona pt. 1, etc.

I just really feel like because of the system he's in they can run multiple plays from one set. By reading the defense pre-snap (which, yes, is a good attribute) and how they react to the formation, motions etc. Mariota more times than not knows where he's going with the ball before the ball is even snapped. Then Oregon - who routinely plays inferior opponents - has the far superior athletes who can easily beat their men.

I guess this was just a long-winded, nicer way of saying he's, what looks like to me at least, a one-read QB at Oregon (not saying he can't evolve, if he hasn't yet. But it is what it is, and that's Oregon's scheme). And again, that's not saying this is bible for every single play, but more times than not.

I know his stats are ridiculous, but I just want to see more from Mariota than an Oregon scheme that has made players like Jeremiah Masoli and more recently Darron Thomas look like "elite" QBs at times.

Don't get me wrong, I still think Mariota should go in the first round just on his physical gifts alone. Because if he does pan out, he could be what everyone wanted Kaepernick to be.

Good analysis, hard to argue with that.

Maybe I'm just biased becuase I've seen every game of Mariota's while at Oregon, but I have a hard time seeing him fail in the NFL. The Kaepernick comparison is spot on, IMO. I've said for the last two seasons that I expect him to be a better version of Kaepernick.

Now again, I've only watched about 50% of the Oregon games. But this is just what I've picked up on while watching. Idk if I'm the most qualified person to be making these assessments but that's what I've observed.

And yeah, the physical tools are there. Can he put them together along with the IQ and wherewithal at the NFL level is the question.

I've asked you to explain this in two other threads, and you haven't. How in the world is Winston "head and shoulders" above Mariota?

I'm hesitant to answer because it's just one if those things. There are no numbers to back it up, not really. But I have watched plenty of both of them play. Mariota is a system player. That is kind of all there is to it. There is a TON of read option in their offense, there is a lot of concepts that will never sniff the NFL, and there are very few times that you will see a play that you would ever see on Sunday. Almost all of the passing plays that Oregon run involve 1 read, occasionally 2. There is a ton of bootleg passing, stuff like that. He just has almost NO experience running an offense anything even close to what he will be asked to do on Sundays. In the times that he has been asked to make plays like this (multiple reads), he does not look good. Again, I have no numbers. You just have to watch him play. A lot of reputable scout/media types will back this claim up. This is not to say that Mariota could not succeed in the NFL. He can. But he will either need a lot of bench time or a coach who Is willing to build an offense from the start to tailor to his strengths.

Winston, on the other hand, has already displayed a LOT that he can be a top level passer. He has been very up and down THIS season, I am very aware. There are flaws in his game, but I do contribute a lot of this years failures by him to lack of chemistry with his current receivers, and maybe some distractions by all the off the field stuff. I hate to be "that guy" and say go look at his tape from last season, but it's really all you need to see. He showed the ability to make NFL-level reads and throws as a first year starter, and as a redshirt freshman to boot. He did it all year last year, obviously, as he won the heisman. He looked downright unstoppable. He showed almost no flaws at all. Obviously he has regressed some this season as I already said, but the fact that he has already shown us that he can play at an NFL level when it comes to operating an offense, making quick reads and decisions, and actually making the throws accurately is enough to put him a mile above Mariota, who has not even come close to any of those things. He's a fast runner. That's about it.

The off-the-field stuff is totally a separate issue, with both guys. Mariota has the potential to be a shining guy in a community, kinda like Drew. He's a great guy. But that won't mean anything if he can't get on the field. By all accounts they are both hard workers and leaders. But it's very evident to me that Winston is supremely talented. I'm not a FSU fanboy by any means, but I can't not be a fan of Winston, just knowing the talent that he has. I can't wait to watch him on Sundays.

EDIT: looks like someone beat me to pretty much exactly what I said

I wish he'd do something really stupid and drop to 3rd Rd. I'd definitely take him and have Drew be his mentor for 3 years. At least its a project that COULD amount to something great as opposed to taking a project CB
