I'm really surprised there wasn't a move to do it this year.

Does non action mean they're ready to move on?

No. Next offseason is when it will be telling if an extension is not done. Doing it this year makes no sense really.

Why is that? With a cap hit of $26M, wouldn't an extension now relieve a lot of the stress?

Yea but you would just be extending the cap hit to future years. If Brees isn't in the plans for 2016, 2017, etc., why extend him? Just absorb the large hit now and get what you can out of him. After that, you part ways.

I'm reading into this that the team doesn't think Brees has a 5 year future here. I guess this could change and this season will be the best barometer of his future here.

You are in part making sure his level of play doesn't drop. He has a great year, you extend and relieve some cap following year. He plays bad, you either trade what you can or ride it out one last season.

This. His contract is much easier to extend without this years 26 million out of the way. If they are able to absorb it this year, the team will have a lot of flexibility going forward. Our biggest mistake was thinking Loomis was a genius for the way he "magically" made enough room to sign a big name free agent. We ended up with a few "stars" surrounded by guys that should have been on the practice squad. Loomis is doing what he should have done all along this offseason. I applaud him for correcting his mistakes.

They could always let the current contract run out & proceed to go on one year deals until Brees retires or the organization decides it isn't in their best interest to retain him.

meh, some players didn't play up to their capabilities, some got hurt, don't think much of that is on loomis.

Thanks for all the input from everyone. This has been bothering me. I've seen Brady extend several times over the last few years and was just wondering why we didn't do the same thing.

also, if we have to release him after this year cause of whatever, it'll save 20 million against the cap next year. Only 7 in dead money or so.

They have apparently purged enough of the roster to not need it this year and extending him now might very well but us in cap hell again in 2-3 years. This allows us to get younger and fix most of the cap mistakes of the past.

He is already 36, five years from now he is 41.
Last year do you know many starting Quarterbacks were over the age of 38? None

Who? Our biggest issue has been highly paid players, like Grubbs and Evans, not playing up to their contract last yeat

For what its worth I dont think the pats extend brady if they are coming of f a disasterous season like us. NE is the most cut throat team in the league but as long as they keep winning I think they'll ride him out.

Have to wonder if we had a fairly good season the same would of been done. But others have nailed it. You dont want to be stuck with this deal if he takes a steep decline. Its a good move.

I know everyone loves Drew but the realization is setting in that we need to be looking for the next guy soon. Anyone who thought he was playing 5 more years is kind of wishful thinking

Yea....like right now. The math in this situation is scary. His salary cap hit for 2016 is $27.4M ($7.4M is dead money if he's not here) and I can't see any scenario where we pay him that. Even if you extend him 2 years at $10M, you still have an average salary exceeding $15.5M a year ($47.4M/3years).

If he's willing to take $10M a year on an extension next year, that means he's playing like crap and we will want to move on....sooner rather than later.

Or the one that lost, but made it, in the SB the year before?
