I WANT TO CHALLENGE ALL THE SELF APPOINTED EXPERTS

that post on this sight to explain the huge gulf between free safety & strong safety that can explain why a good football player can play one position & not the other. For all the people who claim to be such experts, I want someone to explain how a smaller, slower corner from OSU can be a better player than a faster, bigger, stronger player from Utah. I think you all know who the two playeres in question are.

I'm actually with you on that, but the difference is that a strong safety is going to be better at run defense and a free safety is likely to be better at coverage. So speed and strength are a factor in determining which players play where. I'm assuming you probably knew this already, but I agree that a good football player could play either one.

Now this is a post that I can agree with. All the BS about a guy being shoed into one position & not another is someone trying to sound like they actually know something everyone lese doesn't. That being said, a guy like Paulomalu can play wherever he wants & be an asskicker.

First off, in modern day pro football there is very little difference between the two positions. So, theoretically, there shouldn't be any difference, except for a scheme here or there. You obviously know the traditional differences, but I would say a willingness to stick your head in a pile is the big difference. That's one of the knocks on Smith. Doesn't want to get physical, doesn't want to hit. I don't care how big you are, if you're not willing to hurt yourself, to violently throw yourself at another person at full speed, then you can't play def in the league. Scouts aren't sold that Smith, a former WR, has that mentality.

A Free Safety has to be extremely intelligent. It's really the quarterback of the secondary and has to make a lot of instinctual calls back there in coverage and where he needs to be and direct others. Not sure how this relates to your Sean Smith jerkoff session but carry on.

Have the scouts all the info? He happens to be a former wide reciever who also played his senior year in High school at running back gaining 1500 yards & scoring over 20 touchdowns. As for as jerking someone off goes, I haven't heard so many people jerk off over a corner back whose been consistently beaten in so many big games. I can still replay in my head how Early Doucet punked the hell out of Jenkins on his touchdown in the NC game.

Sean Smith is very comparable to Pat Watkins of the Cowboys. Watkins is 6'5" and ran a 4.43 in the 40...tremendous measurables, but doesn't translate into playing DB. Michael Hawthorne also comes to mind. It's easy for people who haven't followed the draft much before now to look at the height and 40 time, and think the guy will be an All-Pro. I've watched some film on him (not just highlight reels), and i'm not overly impressed. He doesn't have great recognition, and he doesn't turn his hips well...2 absolute musts to be an impact player in the secondary. I think the earliest he should be picked is the 3rd round. He will be picked higher than that, but he will end up frustrating the team that picks him by never living up to the measurables. As for any talk of us taking him at #14, that is pure stupidity. Malcolm Jenkins is a MUCH better player.

Huge difference, Free Safety, usually calls out the formation, makes all secondary checks, and has to cover more ground, the last line of defense, better in coverage and not as good against the run. Strong safety is not as good against the pass, but is still expected to be able to do well in coverage will be rolling down a lot in cover 3, or coming down in quarters coverage usually covering a TE. Also is a much better run player he may even be at LB'er depth in some instances. Free safety will not typically be rolling down in coverage will typically be able to cover more ground.

Okay, what's the big difference. It's the reason why Roy Williams can't play in the league. Scheme wise there is a difference, obviously, but abiities are basically the same. A strong safety has to be able to cover in today's football or he gets exploited ala Roy Williams ala Roman Harper. So, what's the huge difference in skill set?

I would say the Free Safety is typically faster, especially in the college game, in the pros it may not be much difference, but they for the most part have to be able to do both from either positon, get involved in the run game but also be able to cover.

Gridiron, can you get Sean Smith's you know what out of your mouth for a little while and give the ranters a break?...i'm sick of seeing this dude's name on the Saints board...is he that freakin good?....would you have ever heard of him if Utah had not played Alabama in the Sugar Bowl?...i actually would rather take Chung, Delmas or William Moore over the extremely raw Sean Smith
