What do you think Dan Quinn will bring to the NFC South, having success in the West...do you think he tries to build the Falcons like a NFC West team?

Not a fan of the Falcons getting a defensive minded coach w/ an already potent offense.

I think it's a good hire for them, but I wouldn't expect to see the Falcons turn into the Seahawka anytime soon.

Seahawks built one of the nastiest D's I've seen in a long time. I would give credit to the GM for that....I don't think Quinn is some sort of super coach, he just had an abundance of talent all over the field

Yep, it will be dependent on talent evaluation.

I do think it is a very good hire though

Honestly Quinn is a total wildcard. For one--that Seattle team was ridiculously loaded with talent so they ran a really basic scheme and just lined up and beat you. This wasn't a situation where he was having to get creative to try to scheme around talent deficiencies like Ryan does with us or like he will have to do now in Atlanta.

We're not totally sure how much of a hand he had in scouting or developing that Seattle defense. Could be a lot, making him a great hire or he could've just been the guy responsible for a basic scheme using superior talent--a luxury he won't have now.

The other thing is you've always got to be wary of coordinators who come out from under a head coach whose area of expertise is on their side of the ball. Carroll is a defensive-minded guy so we're not exactly sure how much autonomy Quinn had in that situation and how much of that defense was actually Pete. Now if I had to guess, Pete strikes me as more of a motivator/CEO-type HC who let's his coordinators coordinate but we have no way of knowing for sure.

I'm just glad they didn't get Rex Ryan.

Yeah, I would have worried if they got Rex Ryan. He may not put them ahead in the divisional standings overall, but he has quantifiable positive results in affecting teams' defenses at executive coaching levels. Also with the "Ryan" schematic for defenses, he knows how to impact defenses year one in the draft and FA.

I also think Quinn is a good hire. But to me I think them keeping Mike Smith, with his (sometimes, hard-earned) experience and making a change at the GM level would have been the wisest choice for the Falcons. Contrary to popular belief, Mike Smith is a great players coach and became a pretty good head coach.

People thought Jacksonville would convert into Seattle 2.0 (on defense). The same will go for Atlanta.

Good coordinators (Smith, Haslett, etc.) don't always turn out to be good HCs.

It's similar to how some good college coaches (Saban) often can't cut it in the NFL.

Let me know when they sign Cliff Avril, Earl Thomas, Bruce Irvin, Michael Bennett, Kam Chancellor, Bobby Wagner and Richard Sherman.

I give him two drafts to turn that defense around. He's had a ton of talent at every level on that Seattle team

Good luck. Looks like you guys will need it seeing as how you went 0-2 against Mike Smith last year with the league's worst defense.
