Nailed it:

quote:

The New England Patriots and Rob Gronkowski have restructured his deal for the 2017 season, giving him a chance to become the highest-paid tight end in the NFL.

The new deal will give Gronkowski a chance to boost his salary this year from $5.25 million to $10.75 million, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus.

Re-work of contract was still needed though

How did it benefit the Patriots cap wise? I think they are paying him the same amount but with possible incentives on top of what was already guaranteed.

Didn't touch 2018 or 2019 either

Gronk was initially scheduled to earn $5 million in cash in 2017, but he can now earn as much as $10.75 million if he reaches certain incentives.

I think his guaranteed is the same or around the same just with some cherries on top

Added:

It’s a win-win scenario for both parties. For the Patriots, this keeps their star tight end happy and it doesn’t cost them all too much in the grand scheme of things. At $10.75 million, Gronk would become the highest paid tight end in the NFL. Entering this offseason, he was the eighth highest paid tight end in the league.

So they are investing more into him while maintaining the same risk they had before

Keeps him from holding out or becoming a locker room distraction.

Other than that, they definitely lost money wise if Gronk hits the incentives.

Pats have some extra change in their pocket and decided to give Gronk an extra incentive to play like 2014. They were in the middle of contract talks when he got hurt last season so it was put on hold. This is a good faith gesture to go into complicated contract negotiations upcoming.

68 TDs in 88 games

Also 9 TDs in 10 career playoff games. So actually it's 77 TDs in 98 games

I doubt that there's ever been a player that has wanted a meaningless score more than Gronk.

ETA: Apparently the media has addressed this. Like, widespread addressed it.
