Grade the 2012 Saints Draft

Since we all like to assign draft grades, we can do it for this one since it is about 3 years ago.
This was the draft where we traded our #1 to New England (Mark Ingram trade) and lost our 2nd to Bounty Gate. New England didn't do much with the extra selection and traded it to the Bengals who took Guard, Kevin Zeitler.
Draft grades weren't kind to us, with most ranging from C- to F due to the lack of picks.
We entered with 5 picks, and didn't get to pick until the 3rd round.
#89 - Akiem Hicks, DT, Regina
For where he was selected, the Saints got pretty good value here. He has been a solid role player for the D-line, and while I thought he was poised for a monster season last year, he did fall off...but then so did everyone. I'd give this pick a B.
#122 - Nick Toon, WR, Wisconsin
This is the make-or-break season for Toon. After a couple of lack luster seasons, I feel he is ready to earn solid playing time and the #3 receiver spot. He is big, physical, and has good hands. It also looks like he has the confidence he lacked early on. Going to give him a C+ for the way he turned it on last season at the end.
#162 - Corey White, CB, Samford
White showed so much potential early on but steadily regressed each season until he found his way off the roster. He was forced to play early due to injury and just never had the confidence or awareness skills to play corner in this league. Pick is a D-.
#179 - Andrew Tiller, G, Syracuse
Released by the team in 2013. Pick is an F.
#234 - Marcel Jones, T, Nebraska
Lasted a few seasons with the Saints until making his was to Baltimore's practice squad in 2014. 7th round pick, so hard to be super critical here and at least he stuck around, unlike Tiller. Still, really no value at all. Pick is a D-.
So I would have to rate this draft a C-/D+. We kind of had the deck stacked against us, but we selected two players that have either contributed immediately or have potential to make an impact in 2015. Three straight misses in the lower rounds bring the overall grade down, but if Toon stands out this year and Hicks gets back to last year's form, this draft could be a C+ for those two guys alone.

Not a good draft at all.
It's easy to forget that Hicks is a third rounder since he was the first one we chose.
But I was still hoping for more out of him.
Still believe in Toon.

look I am not white fan at all, but you did get a fair amount of production out of a 5th rd pick, so a D seems harsh.
The grade for this draft will depend upon Toon this upcoming season IMO.

Because of this, I'm going to be more lenient.
Hicks, being a 3rd rounder, has out performed a bunch of 1st rounders from that season. Even with his drop off from last season, I still think he hold a ton of potential. I give that pick a B+.
Toon - Jury is out. But looks like he will get his chance this season. Based off of the fact that he was a 4th rounder and those are expected to take time to develop, I think he is a solid C+. This could move based upon 2015.
White - Again, a 5th rounder, played Safety his last season in college and was moved to CB with New Orleans. Was thrust into playing time with mounting injuries and showed a bit of potential. However, he is no longer on the team. Thats speaks to alot. Was claimed by Dallas this offseason. For playing time and some potential, I say C-.
Tiller - Total miss. Can't even develop. F.
Jones - 7th rounder - stayed on PS a lot. Still in the league. But a miss for New Orleans - D-

Not picking until the 3rd was absolutely miserable. Should have been a harbinger for the season to come. frick Roger.

I almost went with a C/C- based on how much he played, but last year was just so bad I dropped it to a D-.
Still a player I thought would be solid ended up flopping hard when he should have been getting better.

well, that's a development issue I think we've had since Allen left. Promising year one, followed by steady regression. I think that's a staff failure, not scouting.
I'm hoping this trend changes with allen's return.

D- or F. There's 1 inconsistent contributer and another who hasn't done anything but the jury is still out. Missing picks definitely hurts, but I'm not going to use that to make excuses.

The only player I disagree with you about is Toon. I'd give him a D-. If it wasn't for last season he'd be an F, no question

As of right now Toon gets a D- at best. He has everything you can want out of a WR except production during regular season games. He looks like a WR, his dad was a great NFL WR, he's a beast in training camp, but now it's time to reach his potential or GTFO. Maybe he's just a headcase, but Seantavius Jones is about to pass him up if he doesn't get it together very soon.

I still believe in Nick Toon as well...hopefully he doesn't make a fool out of me. shite, even CSP still believes in him.

Not too many people get that good of production out of a 3rd

Ungradeable until I see this year....guess a C for now

C not bad production for a 5th rounder.
Other 2 guys are misses, but then again so are most 6th and 7th rounders.
Overall, I give it a C based on what they had.

Just going by the picks we had I give it a B-. That could bump up to a B+ if Toon shows more this year, or could downgrade to a C- if Hicks regresses and Toon doesn't show up.
Hicks has been very good for a third rounder and Toon has finally shown us some stuff. White actually played decent in 2013 when Greer went down and was a very solid tackler. Last year was horrible though and it looked like he regressed a lot. The last two picks were late round Oline, which have no special teams value. They were never able to crack the backup spots so it's not surprising they are gone.
