Bad news: Saints will probably still be over the cap

Here's the link for the cap adjustment: LINK

Brees's fault.

Wouldn't that be 10mil to 153 or so? That would put the Saints at 1mil over the cap.

Restructure cam Jordan saves you 7mil

Cut hawthorn saves your 2.25mil (adds 2.26mil to dead money)

Those two moves makes 9mil and gives you 8mil to spend. And let's be honest, Brees isn't going to go into the season with a 30mil cap hit either.

Smart move would be to make more room for the free agency class of 2017

When the dust settles, really doubt a $ 13mil increase. Called greed.

So the Saints will make another brilliant splash in free agency.

After we trade Brees for a 1st rd pick that we will probably use on a baffling player. I wonder if we can find a way to split up the extra 13 mil all between RG3, Manziel and Kaepernick. We can have an awesome QB battle.

God, I hope not. I can't blame Brees' contract for our cap problems to this point, but if he goes into next season with a $30 million cap, with this huge talent deficit that we currently have, then I'll be pretty pissed.

I still can't believe the Browns spent a 1st rounder on that sideshow. I wouldn't be surprised if Kaepernick went to another team and did a good job. I think RGIII is a career backup from now on.

I wouldn't be surprised if he took a little paycut. He doesn't have many years of good qb play left and I think he wants to win now.

huh? The salary cap is a pre negotiated percentage of league revenue per the CBA. The NFL's greed is going to lower league revenue so they don't have to pay the players as much?

The team will be able to make a few simple moves to get back under. Things are not as bad as they were last year by any means

The last two years were rough, this year is manageable. They need to get depth across the board instead of trying for homerun hits (byrd). Legitimately could have done what Denver did and build depth with tier 2 guys that mesh

Exactly. I hate to continue to point out the Patriots as the example, but they are the pinnacle of how an NFL franchise should be run.

They simply do not target the big FA targets anymore. They go for quality depth to fill positions of need before a season starts. We target potential high-impact players for positions of need, which carries a hefty pricetag.

When these big free agents don't work out you are left with such a gaping hole in your pocketbook for other needs.

With a 153mil salary cap, the saints are currently at 154.1mil, 1.1mil over the cap.

Notable free agents (good thing, not a single one is going to command a lot of money)
1. Ben Watson, TE
2. Kevin Williams, DT
3. Luke McCown, QB
4. Kyle Wilson, CB
5. Michael Hoomanawanui, TE
6. Rafael Bush, S
7. Kai Fortbath, PK
8. Khiry Robinson, RB
9. Josh Hill, TE

Few notable things:
1. Cameron Jordan: Restructure -> 12.8mil cap hit to 5.8mil
- 147.1mil, 5.9mil under the cap

2. David Hawthorne: Cut -> 4.51mil cap hit, saves 2.25mil (2.26mil in dead money)
- 144.9mil, 8.1mil under the cap

3. Jahri Evans: 8.2mil cap hit, cutting him saves 1.1mil, june 1 cut saves 2.9mil -> I really think we screwed up on this one right here. Unless he retires, he stays on the team imo. 2017 7.8mil cap hit, 6.0mil savings.

4. Marques Colston: 5.9mil cap hit, cutting him saves 3.2mil. It is his last year on the contract...ultimately I think he stays and finishes it.

5. Brandon Browner: 6.4mil cap hit, cutting him saves 950k, june 1 cut saves 2.25mil. No doubts, this is our mess-up of 2015. He stays on until 2017, 6.3mil cap hit with a 5.0mil savings then.

6. Dannell Ellerbe: 5.9mil cap hit, cutting him saves 4.5mil, june 1 cut saves 5.2mil. This is one I think they won't touch, even if he's injury prone. They may approach him for a pay cut, but when he's healthy he's arguably our best LB. I think we don't touch it at all honestly

7. Zach Strief: 4.6mil cap hit, cutting him saves 1.3mil, june 1 cut saves 3.5mil. I think the team looks at this one. With Peat in the wings, either you move him inside or he becomes your backup. Peat will not lose out on a starting spot next year, I 100% guarantee it. Is 4.6mil worth it for a solid backup be worth it? Or is the 1.3-3.5mil in savings necessary? He is under contract until 2018.

8. Thomas Morestead: 4.45mil cap hit, cutting him saves 3.25mil, june 1 cut saves 3.5mil. He is arguably a top 5 putner. But 4.45mil for a punter when we have so many holes is worth a look. He is under contract until 2018 with a cap hit of 4-4.45mil the next 3 years. Is it worth it to have a top 5 punter? Or should we take the SF 49ers route and trade him (like they traded Lee) for a 7th round pick (lol).

Finally:
9. Drew Brees: 30.0mil cap hit, cutting him saves 20mil. Obviously this is one where I'd bet my life he stays on the team. The question is for how much and how long will he be extended. Personally, I think it'll be 3yr/54mil. How did I come up with that? 19.75mil salary in 2016, 18mil after that -> 18.4mil avg salary. Tom Brady: 9mil, Peyton Manning: 17mil, I don't think he takes that large of a paycut as Brady and with his health and age he's worth more than Manning.

Say after all the numbers, he could legitimately save us 10mil this year, just by 3 moves (CJ restructure, Brees extension, hawthorne cut) we could be close to 18-20mil under the cap.
