Saints should trade Brees to the Jets for a 3rd round pick

quote:

The Jets are among those NFL teams closest to the cap ceiling, but they'll find a way to bring Brees aboard by restructuring his contract and releasing a few players. The third-round price is steep, but if anyone can assimilate a new offense in time for the playoffs, it's Brees.

I wouldn't take anything less than 2 first round picks.

TIL that we cut Junior because of Brees

I have spoken for a Brees trade. Even to the Jets. If we trade him for a 3rd everyone involved should be blacklisted from the NFL for life.

How long do ya'll think Brees is going to play?

While a 3rd may be a little low, no way we get 2 first rounders for him.

This guy must have needed to reach his monthly click quota before midnight. I understand taking a different outlook on things but suggesting we got rid of Jimmy and Junior to keep Brees the face of the franchise is just made up.

We aren't shopping Drew. If some team wants him they have to make him available. Any trade to a team with playoff hopes would have to pay a decent price considering Drew just increased that team's win total drastically. 2 firsts for a top 7 QB is actually fair for an established QB with 2-4 years left. How much would Denver have paid to get Peyton in hindsight of what he has done there? How much would Minny pay for another 2009 Brett Farve? Drew isn't leaving here at market value. Any team that wants him has to overpay to get him. Supply and Demand.

Edit: 2 1st round picks is market value for Drew. As an unavailable QB. 3 1st's is a trade worth listening to and considering. 1 3rd is why the Jets are the Jets. They paid more for Sanchez and Geno.

He has value now.
Think what we could do with that cap space in the future.
Some of the rookies we have will need bigger contracts soon.

All rookie deals are 4 years unless it is Peat or Anthony in which case they are 5.

Only big contract coming up is Armstead. Resigning Drew lowers his cap and Jimmy|JG come off the books after next year.

The cap is no longer set and will continue to rise...I see no need to stress over money.

The Jets would be SB contenders with Brees. They have all of the pieces except QB, and he still has another 3 or 4 solid years left. He may not be worth two first to a shitty team, but those would be two late firsts for the Jets. That's worth it if it gives you a chance.

But even if moving on from Brees is the best idea (I think the NFC is too weak right now to make that move), there's no way we do it after having won 3 of our last 4.

Dead money is really going to hurt us next season. Brees really can't be kept at his current cap hit. We'll see if Loomis and Payton are willing to kick the can again for a team that is less likely to compete than in the past.

The good news with our cap situation:
-Our LBs will be dirt cheap for the next 3 seasons.
-If Lewis gets healthy, our CBs will also be a huge steal for 3 more seasons.
-Armstead seriously may be the best LT in the NFL (not saying that we haven't had some iffy drafts recently, but that's often overlooked that we got an elite player at the 2nd most important offensive position in the 2nd round). He'll be a steal even at the franchise price.
-We gave Cam Jordan a deal that pretty much everyone agreed would be a good deal if he played like he did in 2013, and a subpar one if he played like he did in 2014. He's having an insane year and is a steal at just over $10m/yr.
-Peat has looked worthy of starting when he's played. Cutting Strief "post June 1" will save $3.4m. Cutting Colston (whether "post June 1" or before) will save ~$2.7m.

The bad news:
-Cutting Jarhi saves, at most, $2m for next season's cap.
-Byrd is, as of now, overpaid. I'm not freaking out, though. He should get better. I don't think that it's a coincidence that our defense has been improving since he's come back. Would like to see him cause some TO's, doe.

We really need to hit on two linemen in next year's draft. One guard and more importantly, one DL that can get after the passer. And as I said in the other thread, I think we should spend every penny we can scrounge up on a mid-range vet WR.

Don't try to understand these writers the only explanation like the OP said is that he is drunk. Most likely he is a Jets fan who throws out stupid scenarios like a lot of people on here after someone gets cut or players on other teams that could be an assets but don't even know if they would be available for trade saying shite like should we? could we? blah blah blah.

Certainly not sign anyone that would contribute as much as Drew Brees

One minor correction; Armstead was a 3rd round pick, makes him even more of a steal. Dude might be the best player on the team.
