re: Eleminating Kick Offs - New Rule If Imposed?

I wonder how many young guys wont even get a shot to be on the team since there will be fewer special teams needs.

Special teams is another very exciting element of football.

This is pathetic.

re: Eleminating Kick Offs - New Rule If Imposed?
Instead of a kickoff, it's a punt from the 30. Can someone dig up the stats on the usual starting position after a punt from the 30?

With this rule one of the best plays/ most exciting plays in sports, the the onsides kick, is eliminated from football and replaced with a 4th and 15. Can someone dig up the stats on 4th and long v. Onsides kick conversion percentage?

this would have been the best time for Vince to have introduced the XFL.

"After a touchdown or field goal, instead of kicking off, a team would get the ball on its own 30-yard line, where it's fourth and 15," TIME's Sean Gregory writes. "The options are either to go for it and try to retain possession or punt. If you go for it and fall short, of course, the opposing team would take over with good field position. In essence, a punt replaces the kickoffs."

I would rather that than watching kickers kick it out of the back of the endzone.

i will point out that this almost guarantees a return wheras many NFL kickers today boot it out of the back of the endzone and there's zero action.

i think theres better ways to fix it than what goodell has proposed.

Thanks.

Feel free to think eliminating a kickoff will destroy the game and no one will watch anymore.

I'll live in reality, personally.

It would be way easier for teams like the Saints to come back when down 2 or more scores in the final minutes.
Onside kicks are rarely ever successful.
We have a way better chance of converting 4th and 15.

This is so stupid. It would basically cause every punt return team to go into a safe formation to prevent a possible fake. The possibility of converting the 4th and 15 on a fake punt is way more likely than recovering a surprise onsides kick IMO. Chances would probably be also higher when the offense tries to convert the 15 yards compared with the traditional on-sides kick. Makes no sense at all.

re: Eleminating Kick Offs - New Rule If Imposed?
Does anyone have an actual statistic on what percentage of injuries in the NFL occur on kickoff returns? Do we even truly know that injuries are more likely to occur in a kickoff than any other types of plays in the NFL?

While I think it would hurt the game of football to do this, I would agree that it would move along just fine if the kickoff were to be eliminated.

That having been said, if they do eliminate it, they had better have a really damn good reason for it. This move would alter the game in some form in every aspect one could think of. It would alter game strategy, clock management, game decision making, roster size and roster management, player positions, players' jobs, coaches' jobs, etc. If they do this, they better fricking have a good reason for it.

How has nobody in this thread realized that this is just more posturing by Roger ala the righteous indignation regarding the bounties. "well I TRIED to protect the players by eliminating the kickoff"

I also fail to see how this would improve player safety over the current rules.

Most teams would likely punt, which are also high risk plays.

No more kick offs, no more dodge ball, time outs instead of arse whippings, cages around trampolines, all contributing factors to the wussification of America
