A bunch of retired guys played flag football in San Jose last night, in hopes of creating a product someone will watch on television.
But Saints quarterback Drew Brees is aiming even higher with his attempt to popularize the safer version of his sport.
According to Mike Triplett of ESPN.com, Brees is launching a co-ed youth flag football enterprise called the Football ‘N’ America League with an eye toward the future of the game.
“I think that this has the opportunity to really save the game of football, honestly,” Brees said. “I think we’re filling a void that is much-needed.
“We felt like, you know what, we have the opportunity here to really create what will be the premier youth co-ed flag football league in America.”
Brees said he came upon the idea while coaching a kids team in San Diego the last few offseasons. The league will begin in New Orleans and around Louisiana this fall, before expanding to other states next year.
Brees played flag football as a kid in Texas and didn’t play tackle until his freshman year in high school And he’s turned out OK. But now that he has four kids, he’s even more sure of the need for such programs.
“I would not let my kids play tackle football right now, because I don’t think that’s necessary, and I don’t think it’s as fun at this level, and I just think there’s too much risk associated with putting pads on right now at this age,” Brees said. “So how can I still allow them to enjoy the game and learn about the game and develop a passion for the game and enjoy everything it has to offer? Well, flag football.
“I think that flag football is the perfect alternative to the parents who have concerns about concussions and the injuries around football. Because you’re still able to enjoy the game of football, but in a very fun, safe and yet competitive environment. And you can still learn all the same life lessons and values from a game of flag as you would tackle.”
Between concussion concerns and the cost of equipment and insurance, it’s possible that the move toward flag football becomes a trend anyway. But while Brees is getting in this is as a business venture, he also raises some valid points, and his support can only help the movement.

We played flag football in grade school and that was 25 years ago. Wasn't aware this was a new thing.
Still think the future of tackle football will be with less/ softer pads minimal padded helmets and more rugby style tackling.

The olympics was considering adding 7 on 7 football for a while and then they cut baseball.
With baseball and softball back, I could see them make a push for 7 on 7 football again.
Here was the list of sports that were considered to be added to the 2020 Olympics (with added sports in BOLD):
Air sports
Baseball/softball
Basketball (3 on 3)
Bowling
Bowls
Bridge
Chess
Climbing
Dance
Floorball
Flying Disc
Football
Karate
Korfball
Netball
Orienteering
Polo
Racquetball
Roller Sports (Skateboard)
Squash
Sumo
Surfing
Tug of War
Underwater Sports
Waterski/Wakeboard
Wushu

I'm all about surfing but how the hell are you going to guarantee surfing in a 16 day window at random cities around the globe other than one of those stupid wave pools.

All of those events sound like things the US would dominate in. Surfing? Sumo? 7 on 7 football? Climbing? Tug of war?

It's a money grab for him.
I coach in madisonville and his team came in and gave us a proposal.
They want $5,000 just to be part of it and use DB9 as a promotion then each player's fees would be $250
Plus all games would have to be outside and the field is different,
rules were similar. The league isn't part of NFL play 60 so you can't use any team names and the new league was low rent t-shirts instead of jerseys and the flags were shitty.
I love DB9 as the saints Qb but all he sees is $$$$.
I'm suprised he dosent make them wear wrangler jorts to dbl dip.

Ditching the excess pads and the helmet altogether is probably the only way the game survives

Not surprising at all. Drew is all about Drew. Everyone should find it insulting that he's trying to use this "save the world" bullshite as a facade to stuff his pockets even more. If he really cared about this issue he would use his golden boy persona to get a bunch of heavyweight sponsors involved so the leagues and kids parents wouldn't have to fork over so much money. It's really pathetic on his part.
I think Drew is a great QB and I'm thankful he's been the QB of the Saints but his fake persona drives me nuts.

Everything you have said is unsubstantiated. Who are you an alter of? Maybe the person who has coincidentally heard similar things.
P.S. If you're a real coach and hard up for money, there are easier ways to put meat on the table.

I love Brees. But if his off the field PR/sponsorship/restaurant endeavors don't make your cringe-dar go off I got some bad news.

The best time I ever had coaching was my son's Flag Football team when he was like 8 or 9.
