With respect to both men, what would make Ted Williams his favorite?

Does anyone else on here have a favorite athlete that you only saw old footage of? Ted's final game was in 60 (ish) and Drew wasn't born yet.

1. He was perhaps the GOAT at what he did (hitting)

2. He gave up three years at the height of his career to serve as a Marine fighter pilot in Korea

3. He was a badass who told the press to frick off, refused to tip his cap to the fans at Fenway Park and generally did whatever the frick he pleased

Great. They cut it off right before he explains why.

All of these are in direct contradiction of Drew Brees and the way he conducts himself.

Sounds like Williams should be a bunch of other pro clowns favorite though.

Ted Williams was basically on his deathbed when Drew was drafted.

That probably had something to do with the reason he didn't wear it before.

Well I found an explanation to the last 2 of your list:

quote:

Williams served as a naval aviator (a U.S. Marine Corps pilot) during World War II and the Korean War. He had been classified 3-A by Selective Service prior to the war, a dependency deferment because he was his mother's sole means of financial support. When his classification was changed to (1-A) following the American entry into World War II, Williams appealed to his local draft board. The draft board ruled that his draft status should not have been changed. He made a public statement that once he had built up his mother's trust fund, he intended to enlist. Even so, criticism in the media, including withdrawal of an endorsement contract by Quaker Oats, resulted in his enlistment in the Marine Corps on May 22, 1942.

It goes on to say he went over and beyond what he needed to do and was a GREAT military man during his stay in the service. But somehow the media and fans were on his arse.

Two Pages and no mention of Deuce in the pic? Also Deuce wearing #22!

Edit: I wonder if he became "Mr. Deuce" after he changed to #26.
