I'm really surprised at this. That's a pretty damn big difference and makes sense why this is taking so long. Concerns me that much more that something will happen in only 5 days

WWL said yesterday he was the 17th highest paid QB last year. Give this man his money. He's a guy that will be with the organization long after his playing days are over.

This is not that big of a deal.

Sounds like it's more about the STRUCTURE of the deal rather than the total amount of the deal.

To wit:

Let's say the offer is 5 years, $100 million with $30 million guaranteed. IF all the years are evenly split in terms of salary, that's $14 million a year, with a $20 million per year cap hit (the $30 million is spread over the length of the contract, or $6 million per).

Let's say that Drew want $40 million guaranteed. That changes things to $12 million per year in base salary, with a $20 million per year cap hit (again, assuming that all five years have the same base salary, which is unlikely). So this can get worked out fairly easily.

What we have here is a case of irresponsible, sensationalist reporting, which is, sadly, all too common in today's media.

IIRC back in April or May he ran with a report that a deal with Drew would be done by the end of that week

They've offered to make him the highest payed player in the NFL and in franchise history.

No he hasn't. The Saints took a big chance and signed Drew to a big contract considering he was coming off major surgery with a better than 50% chance that he would not play again.

No doubt Drew has played better than any Saints' fan could have dreamed of, and props to Drew for not ever bitching about his pay after he reached elite level.

That being said, Drew is now being a dick about his contract and has shown that all that talk about him being a team player and how he would leave money on the table for the sake of the team was/is total BS.

means nothing without guaranteed money.

they took a chance but not a big one. Contract was structured for a average first year with something like a 12 million roster bonus due after first year. There was a way out for the Saints without much financial loss if Drew couldn't have come back.

the amount of guaranteed money has nothing to do with leaving money on the table for other players.

The Saints have been trying to pay him a whole lot of money since 2010, but he wouldn't sign a contract, wouldn't sign one in 2011, and so far won't sign one in 2012, so enough with Brees was underpaid and he's such a super duper guy for not complaining about it.

Right now, he can eat a bag of dicks. I'm fed up with him.

If he signs a long term deal, then he better be All Universe with The Avengers-like super powers on the football field. I'm not going to give the man any slack.

Yeah the Saimts took that chance, and parlayed that intk $$$$$. Keep the guy happy, it might be a long time before u have a guy like this again. They just gave up 5 mil from SPs suspension. Use that part.

Nickle and diming just sucks.

This. Brees decided to have it play out this way. The Saints' track record of re-upping high performers is way more moderate than Tom Condon's track record of fricking over anybody he can (including his own clients like Alex Smith when it benefits Tom Condon).

No, the Saints offered Brees new deals in multiple offseasons. BREES chose to play it out this way, not the Saints.

By benefiting Tom Condon, you mean his other client who was being pursued by Alex Smith's own team?
