Does an elite NFL head coach go 7-9 in 3 consecutive seasons?

Sean Payton is getting a lot of attention and disapproval on here since Denver’s 1-5 start to the season.

Do you really think he was elite in New Orleans when he went 7-9 in 3 consecutive seasons (2014-2016)?

He actually went 7-9 a total of 5 times (2007,2012).

Regardless of your roster I don’t think an elite NFL coach does that.

I think several on this very board gave him a pass and never spoke of him in a negative light when he was in New Orleans.

He won a Super Bowl 3 years after his first head coaching gig. Throwing a few 10 or 11 win seasons around 3 consecutive 7-9 years buys you a lot of cache.

He wasn't the HC in 2012

A lot of people gave him a pass for 2014-2016 because of the whole bounty gate situation and how the league took some key draft picks from the team

Sean Peyton will only be elite if he trades for Kurt Cousin

For a short window he was pretty elite. Having a top 5-10 qb of all time undoubtably GREATLY helped with everything.

This seems like kind of a silly thread though. Feel like it's meant to troll a specific board so you can run to the MSB with a quote or two.

Most overrated HC in NFL history

One of the worst HC’s to win a Super Bowl

Biggest playoff choker in NFL history

He has quite the resume

I think he can be both a good coach and overrated.

I think his Offense is stale, and Drew Brees propped some of his failings up a lot.

And that he is also a pretty good coach.

This is pretty much a fact. Took a damn miracle just to beat the Vikings.

That's the NFL.

In his first year as head coach, Payton took a team that had spent the previous year practicing in a parking lot in San Antonio (and had the second worst record in the NFL) to the NFC Championship game. Yes he’s elite. Whether things work out in Denver or not doesn’t change what Payton accomplished in New Orleans.

Never is a bit much but your more right than wrong for once.
Let me state a fact that cannot be denied.
CSP was the best coach the Saints have ever had in the 56 year history. The most wins. The most Div titles. The most winning seasons. The most SB wins.

So yeah. He gets a pass on a lot.

Duh

All I know is he is unquestionably the greatest coach in the history of this franchise. I’ll always be grateful for him making this team not only relevant, but a Super Bowl champ. If you want to say that was because he had Brees, fair point. Nick Saban could have had Brees, he passed. Payton didn’t. Didn’t care for the way Payton left, but at least we got some picks for it.

Now I hope Denver has a terrible season this year, because it will make our second round pick from Denver better.

He could have also gone to the Super Bowl a few more times , had it not been Goodell/ referees interference.

"No Call". "49ers in 2011"

"Eric Rudolph push off"

Or a couple of dumb luck plays by the opposing team
