Diluted Samples & the next CBA: Marijuana will be removed as a banned substance

If Radio, and now Peppers, fall like rocks come draft night I think the following plays into where the Saints, or another front office, drafts these guys.
My opinion of course. The NFLPA will fight to get mj off of the banned substance list as they know, and ownership does as well:
1) that the stigma of mj use has gone away.
2) players are losing a ton of money in suspensions for a drug that is now legal in some states;
3) Players are utilizing the smoke to alleviate the pains of playing in the NFL- which is must better than the bad press of players being hooked on pain pills
Add this all together and you have the perfect storm for it to be removed from the ban list.

Maybe if it wasn't the NFL. They're so up their asses and inconsistent o could see it taking a few more states and a another cba cycle or two.

Peppers should fall because he has no real position

There not going to do that considering it's still illegal in most of the US.

You really don't know how this works do you?
The NFL is a private organization. The NFLPA and the NFL collectively bargain on what substances will be tested of the union members as a condition of their being able to play.
The NFLPA and the NFL could simply agree not to test for marijuana.
The legality of marijuana is of no consequence.

it is way beyond time for it to be removed from NFL banned substances. its soon to be recreationally legal in all the states, most likely by the time trumps first term is ending.
anything that shows up in player drug testing that isn't a stimulant, steroids, or PEDs, doesn't give the player any unfair advantage so it should not be tested for or monitored/controlled by NFL policy.
all this BS about trying to control players "outside" of the locker room and off the field, should be gone.
I don't like DWI or wife/girlfriend beaters, but the NFL should have no place in monitoring or punishing players over anything that goes on outside of football

The NFLPA might want to remove marijuana as a banned substance but the owners don't care.
The owners care about money. And if Congress starts to think the NFL is seemingly encouraging marijuana usage by not prohibiting it, they'll start to have discussions about the anti-trust exemption.
So I really don't see the owners going for it until marijuana is actually legal across the majority of states and in regards to the federal government (unless they get a great deal on the next CBA in exchange for it). Even then, I don't think a majority of the players care enough to give up any percentage they might gain in the next CBA.

It's actually legal at least medicinally in more states than its not including Louisiana.
The NBA doesn't test for it. Why does the NFL have to.

Really? Congress has butted in a few times relatively recently on various issues due to their control of the NFL's antitrust exemption. That's where the NFL's TV contracts come in and where their huge revenue streams materialize.
For example, during the domestic violence issues
quote:
Washington lawmakers are taking aim again at the NFL over its response to domestic violence allegations against players — this time debating whether the league should be stripped of its permanent anti-trust exemption.
Bill to remove antitrust for "Redskins" name
quote:
Taking advantage of the publicity associated with the dawn of a a new NFL season, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton has introduced a bill to strip the league of its federal antitrust protection as long as they sanction Washington’s nickname, which many consider racist.
Found another one:
Patriots SpyGate from 2008
quote:
"I am very concerned about the underlying facts on the taping, the reasons for the judgment on the limited penalties and, most of all, on the inexplicable destruction of the tapes," Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., wrote Thursday in a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
The story was first reported by The New York Times.
Specter, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the matter could put the league's antitrust exemption at risk. In a telephone interview with the Times on Thursday, he said the committee at some point will call Goodell to address the antitrust exemption as well as the destruction of the tapes.
This is why the NFL tries to not piss off Congress.

At best, they don't care. They may view marijuana as a substance that is simply another potential distraction for a player.
Or, more likely IMO, they probably would demand that the players give something up pretty big in the CBA for it...and the players aren't going to do that. I don't see the NFL just removing it on its own just because it makes sense.
