By ignoring the running game? This is becoming a trend. You know the only year we stay committed to the run the whole year we won the SB.

The passing game is really efficient and we do it so damn much, you'd think that it would set up the run game perfectly, but Payton just doesn't see it that way. I think not running it made the game longer and allowed Carolina the time to get back in it. With a depleted defense, I would think you'd want to shorten the game as much as possible to avoid stuff like that, but it was a win. Moving forward.

But it's been Payton's distaste for the running game that's been his achilles heel for years IMO.

Or it could have cost us the game if we didn't keep passing.

I was almost rooting for Carolina to get the 2pt conversion. Because that meant we had to score. Which meant we would not go into clock melting mode.
We were not going to run the ball against that front. Their secondary is a joke.

Ingram ran like he had blinders on for most of the game. Payton is a "splash play" coach, and he has little patiences for 2 yard runs.

Between the RBs (ignoring the two "trick plays"), they combined for 19 touches and 59 yards for a sad 3.1 YPC.

the OL got manhandled in run blocking. This was a game where passing yielded a better outcome by far (9.5 Y/A)

I thought the playcalling was exceptional. Brees was on fire and when he's playing that well I think the short passing game is more effective than the running game, especially against Carolina and Luke Kuechly.

1) Ingram is only averaging 3.9 ypc

2) Brees is the best player on the team

3) You usually don't want to take the ball out of the hand's of your best player

When drew is playing like that you can't take the ball out his hands and give it to Ingram, and certainly not against that secondary. Especially with the left side of the line being backups once peat went down. We would have been running right into the best part of their defense.

Going after 2 rookie CBs with a Future HOF QB >>>>>>>>>> running against a top LB corps.

BS! You go with what's working. Our o line wasn't run blocking worth a damn and the pass was working.

Only someone with a mind like Les Miles would be stubborn and force the run when it's not working

We lost the left side of our offensive line to injury, and Carolina's weakness was the passing game.

We also had the best offensive line in the NFL, and a defense that made big play after big play

Also, you run the ball a lot more if you have leads late in the game like we did that year. Same with 2009

you know, we also averaged 4.5 YPC on 468 attempts that year.
We're on pace for 362 attempts on 3.5 YPC

We suck at running.

Not by passing on a team with awful pass defense.
IMO he made really questionable decisions when he:
-chose to kick on 4th and 1 on our 35
-played for a long FG at the end of the game when we had two timeouts
-didn't take the FG off the board before halftime to take one shot at the end zone then re-kick if we didn't get a TD

should have since we had momentum, but their DL and LBers are damn good at filling gaps to stop short yardage so I understand the kick attempt. He has the leg for it, he hasn't really shanked a kick to say I don't have confidence in him.

eh, they didn't allow anything deep and the pressure was coming. we had to dink and dunk for the most part. Their defense kind of clamped down after giving up a chunk early in that drive.

absolutely right call. Look at what we dealt with: last second losses with one possession against Oakland and NYG.

That last drive started with Peat getting hurt, at that point it is completely unknown if Hills could even block against a complex pass rush. Sack and we lose the FG because we didn't have a time out. Take the points there.

I get that but we get at least two more plays if we use the TOs. 51 wasn't a gimme.

Drew gets the ball away quick enough that in a situation like that I'm extremely confident he's not taking a sack unless the Oline sits down on the snap.

Obviously I'm talking about using the TOs before the last 4th down play.

We had a timeout in our pocket. If we get the first there, we likely have 1-2 more plays to get a bit closer, but we didn't convert

But if you take those TOs and don't convert, you give Carolina a lot more time (w/ 1 TO) to try and get in FG range; especially if Lutz missed.

As frustrating as it is to watch the way the game wound down playing for the FG, you had to leave as little time on the clock in case he misses. They would have only needed to go about 20 yards for the win had Lutz missed.
