re: Defense Revamp: Free Agent LBs

dayum, no comments on Butler? He looks like the affordable Dallas OLB (over Spencer) that Ryan could bring along here. Looking for more read on him. No one from around DFW that has seen or read about him more?

-----------------
found a fresh PFF look at the Saints needs (posted thread) and they listed Butler and Antwan Barnes as potential free agent targets for the Saints. We're likely not in the running for bigger bucks Spencer so that makes a lotta sense. Just have at least some veteran presence that have performed in the 3-4 before- all the better having done it in Ryan's specific scheme.

J.J. Watts

You do realize that Watt is probably the rarest of rare commodities in the NFL? It's unheard of for a 3-4 DE to have the sacks he had. Cam Jordan is about as good as you can get for that position in my opinion. Hicks also has potential to be great there. But don't expect them to have the kind of season Watt just had. Watt shouldn't be expected to have that kind of season ever again.

I really like Manny Lawson. He came into the league as a pure pass rusher, but I remember reading something about how good he is against the run now. Wouldn't mind him at all if the price is right. He will probably cost too much though.

re: Defense Revamp: Free Agent LBs
seemed like they liked him at SLB in Cincy's 4-3. His deal last year was only $2.1mil. He prolly can double that for a few years. I don't see him outside. Bucks for someone behind Lofton & Hawhtorne doesn't look like much of a priority at this point.

re: Defense Revamp: Free Agent LBs
Yeah, that's what he was playing in Cincy, and he played it well. But he came into the league known as a pass rusher and played as an OLB in a 3-4 to start his career if I remember correctly. I was actually going to point out that he looks like he could play inside or outside in a 3-4.

Another guy I brought up who I think can play inside or outside is Sean Porter. That may be a good value pick in the later rounds as a guy who could be in a rotation outside and also be a backup inside linebacker.

re: Defense Revamp: Free Agent LBs
love Porter myself. In a 4-3 he looked a steal slam dunk 3rd Rd pick if available. Still talented I dunno if he projects into a 3-4 nearly as well.

Chase Thomas and Gearld Hodges right in the same tier and discussion as well

I think Porter actually played 3-4 olb his first year after Von Miller left and apparently played it great. I wouldn't mind any of these guys in the 3rd, especially Thomas. All can pass cover already, while some of the pure rush guys would have to learn that phase.

Yeah, I also always thought of Porter as a 4-3 guy. Been reading he could play outside in a 3-4 though. Not really sure, but if true, would be a nice all around backup and rotation guy.

This is true. He played in it, and excelled the season before last for A&M. He even drew comparisons to Von Miller because of his play. When A&M switch to the 4-3 this year he looked lost. Blues, c'mon man, I went over this in another thread for you.

It's kind of like with Chase Thomas being used as a 4-3 olb at the senior bowl and sucking. Before that I was seeing him projected at least 2nd round, now it's mostly no sooner than the 3rd.

I believe there was speculation of Porter being a possible 1st round talent after his first year starting.

Yea, I'd say that was done with the assumption that he'd have another solid season.

I swear I once saw Porter listed as a top 5 pick before season started.

He was certainly in 1st Rd talk preseason. That's eons ago in draft stock. Weeks ago Margus Hunt was being thrown around as a 1st. One week at the Senior Bowl and many doubt if he's even 2nd Rd stock now.

My favorite is watching players rise and fall after the season when nothing is happening lol. Makes no sense.
