It was a pretty bad day of football yeasterday. The Rams, a medicore team with a journey man QB in a dome where even their own fans were quiet for most of the game, put it on the Saints for 4 quarters.

In the NFL, a game is never truly over, but this one was over at the end of the 1st Quarter, and sadly the Saints just came out flat and got their arse beat.

How could this team not be ready for this game? I imagine having to maybe weather a Rams rally from playing in their own place, but seriously, how could this team lay an egg with so much on the line?

Here are my thoughts from yesterday:

1. We are a terrible road team, and it's psychological. We go from a super force to a very average team on the road, and there really is no excuse for it or why it happens.

2. Brees played pretty bad, and there are rumors Payton chewed him out, which is great. $100 million or not, he isn't above an arse chewing. I hate that he doesn't rally the troops during the game and that he sits off with the QBs and looks at pictures. Would love to know what he saw when he limp wristed a floater into triple coverage.

3. Jimmy Graham dissapears when the going gets tough. He's a beast and probably the best player on the team, not counting Brees, but my God does the man give up when the team is playing down. Alligator arms, not going for the ball on short throws, no fight in him and I don't know why. The team needs his energy.

4. Hartley is done. He has to be, right? If indeed that was a shank, then it is over for him and good riddance. He is a head case.

5. The special teams coach needs to be fired. Our ST has been plagued with penalties all year, we tackle poorly, and we are terrible on returns. The big thing are the penalties.

6. The O-Line, which many called out since the beginning of the year, is very bad. Loomis and Payton fricked up. They thought these players were going to be "good enough" for Brees, and he is getting killed back there. Strief is a backup. Grubbs and Evans are both having a down year. DLP is terrible. Brown is so bad he had to be benched. Expect the Saints to work some kind of magic this offseason. They HAVE to for Brees' health.

7. The defense ws pretty nonexistant. Kudos to the Rams for controlling our pass rush while a backup journeyman threw to wide-open receivers. We need secondary help pretty badly, and I hope this is the last year we see Harper and Jenkins in the backfield.

8. The playcalling was bad, and this team looked lost from the very beginning. Too many screens, no attempt to run the ball, a terrible play to start the game when we should have worked to get out of the shadow of our own endzone.

So next week is the season. We win, and we get the #2 seed and a home playoff game with a chance of homefield all the way through if Seattle trips up. At this point though, and based on what we have seen all year, is there much faith at all in this team on the road?

For me, sadly, it's no. I see Carolina beating us in a game that will be close, but they will get the edge against a team with a bad O-line and from what it appears, one that has no confidence in itself.

Just a crummy way to end a promising season.

If I didn't know this was written about the Saints, I'd think it was about a 4-10 team.

You're free to dispute anything I wrote if you care to. You posting an emoticon doesn't add much.

Thus bad road team thing is so odd... Like you said there.s no reason for it... It's not weather or crowds (there was neither yesterday)... It's just a mental thing. And it's getting worse. We ground one out in Tampa early in the season that we probably should have lost, but two of the last three road games were absolute blowouts and the game in Atlanta wasn't exactly our finest hour. I do t know what they can do at this point... Sports psychiatrist?

Shocked you waited till after the game to post. Also shocked that your confidence level is so low.

I can't really disagree with much that you said. I've been knowing since about the Jets game that we were soft. But honestly, it doesn't matter, we are a win away from the 2 seed an a bye. And honestly, anything can happen when you get in the playoffs. The ravens proved that last year.

I feel decently confident that we will find a way to win next week, not sure why.

Then, we would only have to win one or zero road games in the playoffs.

Also, at this point, i'm not sure if we can cut hartley until after the season. Don't know if I could trust whoever came in.

This is all that really matters...this season has a similar feel to the 2009 season when everyone wrote the team off after losing the last three games after a 13-0 start.

The margin between teams in the NFL is razor thin, and even thinner in the playoffs. The first objective of every NFL team at the start of the season is to just make the playoffs...and the Saints have put themselves in that position.

Very good summation and probably your best post to date (not saying much). However, I disagree in that I think the saints play inspired football and secure the 2 seed at Carolina next week.

Stat-wise ... they played very well in the 2nd half.

We got into a hole early courtesy of 2 Brees INTs. Then they stole a possession with the onside kick to go up 17. I think the offensive play calling early on is as much to blame as anything else. Everyone knows St. Louis has a great pass rush and our O line is suspect. It probably would have been smarter to try to slow down their pass rush with running plays and screens instead of taking shots right away and allowing the Rams to pin their ears back.

All of our mistakes are correctable.

As bad as Hartley was, Drew played pretty crappy early on himself.

We have 10 wins and we still have a good shot to win the division. Carolina's DBs have not miraculously gotten better in 2 weeks.

I don't remember who it was, some commentator talking head guy (who I don't normally put much value in) said something several weeks back in a pre-game: "Everybody has a plan until they get hit in the mouth." It was a very good statement about football. You can put value on strategy, planning, personnel, but really if you don't come out and play the other guy opposite of you with everything you got, you will lose. Every team we've lost to this year has a physical defense, and our guys looked like the bitch in an Ike/Tina relationship in those games.

Agreed. I think there is a reason no one else has been brought in. But maybe there is a vet who would be solid from the 40 yd range? Like how Kasey and Carney were.

I think it would suck pretty bad to be so high on the team all year only for the bottom to fall out and we miss having a home playoff game in the last two games of the season.

Very true. But it the Saints' case it also depends on the type of team they play. The OL looked pretty good last week against Carolina because they are more of a run stuffing and "keep the ball in front of you" team. But go against a more athletic pass rushing and/or blitz team they struggle mightily.

Plus if a team wants to really put in the work and study the Saints, they can figure out tendencies based on personnel packages and formation.

The Saints defense really needs to play with a lot of emotion and desire because they can play over their heads when into it, conversely they are very average when flat.

It's all gonna depend on particular matchups and the team mindset as to how far this team goes

Not comparable, imo. That team looked like a team that could win the Super Bowl, this one doesn't look like one now and hasn't all year.
