New Orleans Saints minicamp observations: Day 3

The final day of Saints minicamp ended early, but still left us with some good action.

quote:

The third and final day of New Orleans Saints minicamp ended about 45 minutes early on Thursday, but there was still plenty of good action worth noting.

Base Defense: The first walkthrough featured the usual suspects on the defensive line (Cameron Jordan, Sheldon Rankins, David Onyemata, and Alex Okafor). Tony McDaniel, who signed with the team today, also received some first-team reps. The Saints had A.J. Klein and Craig Robertson as the starting linebackers, with Marshon Lattimore and Delvin Breaux lined up on the outside. P.J. Williams, who had been absent with the flu, returned today and was handling slot coverage. Kenny Vaccaro and Vonn Bell were the starting safeties.

Armstead Missing: Terron Armstead left Tuesday early for an undisclosed reason, so rookie Ryan Ramczyk and Bryce Harris split the first-team reps at left tackle.

Kicking: Wil Lutz went a perfect 4-for-4 in field goal drills, connecting from 32, 42, 52, and 46 yards. Unfortunately, tryout kicker Patrick Murray had two misses (52, 46). Murray had two kicks blocked on Wednesday, so it would appear Lutz clearly held his own and boosted some confidence.

Offense bests defense: Ted Ginn Jr. started 11-on-11 drills with a nice touchdown grab in the corner of the end zone, which set the tone for the offense the rest of the way. Coby Fleener did have one drop with A.J. Klein providing some strong coverage. Michael Thomas arguably had the play of the day with Marshon Lattimore providing good coverage. Thomas hauled in a touchdown on a back shoulder throw from Drew Brees, which was one of the Mike doing Mike things. He also had a touchdown grab over the middle from a Garret Grayson pass. Chase Daniel connected with Alvin Kamara on a roll out pass, and missed only one of his six passes.

The defense started to turn things around afterwards, as Grayson had an attempted screen pass broken up by Vonn Bell, and then had a pass broken up in the end zone by Ken Crawley that was intercepted by Chris Banjo, and he essentially closed out practice by getting picked off by linebacker Nathan Stupar. It’s minicamp, but he’s really had some struggles.

Overall, the tone was pretty fun and relaxed for the day. Craig Robertson engaged with some fans during team stretches. The banter was centered around having a dominate defense. Sean Payton didn’t provide any updates on Nick Fairley in his post-practice presser, and the players were getting ready to head out for some time off.

I don't get why they hype guys so damn much when they draft them, just be honest and say, "we like him and think he shows a lot of promise".

but when they draft guys and come out and hold an interview where they stick their chest out and proclaim them as "the next drew brees heir apparent", then that is what we damn well were promised and so we expect to see just that from them, or at the very least, something to justify such hype even if they don't work out.

we as fans think "ok he must really be great", then we see that they are just regular so and so nobodies that they are just taking a flier on, hoping to get lucky.

don't over hype guys and then the fans wont be giving you crap for bad drafting when they turn into busts.

not sure where wee were at draft wise when they spent a 3rd on grayson but that seems like it was a hell of a reach at that spot, but then hindsight and all, but still I cant help but think if he was just a crap shoot, wasn't there a more sure contributor back then the coulda, woulda, shoulda?

Good. With Kaepernik in the fold, we'll be good.

should we be worried about Armstead?

Tackle is one of the deepest spots on the team. Armstead, Peat, Kelemete, and Ramcyzk can all play LT.

I'm a little worried because it's not just Armstead as Kelemete has been missing practice also, and Ramcyzk is a rookie. But I can't imagine both Armstead and Kelemete are seriously hurt at this point so we should be okay.

My takeaways:

The good:

- Rookies are looking good. Lattimore, Williams, Kamara, Anazalone all have had nice moments per reports
- Peterson seems to be an outlier (Happy to be wrong about this one)
- Chase will be an upgrade to McCown it seems
- Lutz may be our best K of the Payton era
- Peat is coming into his own
- Fuller is quietly putting in a strong bid for the 5th WR slot. Strong competition from Lampman as well
- LB depth is greatly improved and Nolan should make a big difference

The bad:
Honestly, not that much bad at this time of year other than injuries.

- Fairley situation. I really hope they didn't botch this and we have more dead weight on the cap. Hopefully he can play and if he can't, there's a fair injury settlement and this doesn't get ugly.
- Armstead - Really don't like him constantly being nicked up. Worried about this long-term health and once again more dead money.

The ugly:

- The media's stupid arse questions. You have Payton three times for the next 6 weeks and waste your questions with stupid shite about scheduling practices with the Texans, the same tired OTA rules changes, etc.
- Local media is really pretty bad outside of Underhill.
- Grayson - It's pretty clear they don't expect much from him at this point. I suspect if that Syracuse kid is even half decent, Grayson gets cut pretty early in camp. The experiment will be over soon.
- Fan stupidity. Some people just get hung up on things and build grudges against certain players. Currently, the guys I see the most irrational hate for are Fleener, Coleman and Crawley. Two of these are UDFA. WTF are you expecting? Fleener is overpriced (sorta) but wasn't terrible. I think he'll get better.

Why are people hating on Crawley he was a rookie last year and he will be a decent corner in the future just needs to learn some technique.
