New Orleans Saints minicamp observations: Day 2
Marshon Lattimore rebounds in a big way for the Saints, defense shines, and quarterback play was pretty inconsistent.
quote:
The New Orleans Saints held their second day of their mandatory three-day minicamp on Wednesday. Once again, the threat of rain and thunderstorms held off to let fans partake in seeing the team in action. Here are some day two observations and notes.
Lattimore Rebounds
Marshon Lattimore had a much better day. During 11-on-11 action, Lattimore went 1-on-1 with Michael Thomas, and ended up breaking up the pass on an inside route. It clearly flustered Thomas, and set the tone for a defensive day. The Saints also put Lattimore up in a spot normally occupied by Kenny Vaccaro on one snap, for what that’s worth. Lattimore also had a good pass breakup on Brandon Coleman, which looked to be a sure catch.
Base Defense
Again, you can’t make too much out of this, but the starting rotation consisted of Cameron Jordan, Sheldon Rankins, David Onyemata, Alex Okafor on the defensive line. Alex Anzalone and Stephone Anthony both saw pretty extensive action as the first-team linebackers. Delvin Breaux and Marshon Lattimore handled top corner duties, with Kenny Vaccaro hovering over Alex Okafor, and Vonn Bell and Marcus Williams handling safety.
Inconsistency
Chase Daniel connected with Tommylee Lewis on a great pass and catch, but then followed it up with an interception by Rafael Bush. Later on in end of half drills, Garrett Grayson took what would have been two sacks and would have had a pick six from Royce LaFrance, but then in between that Grayson connected with Rashad Lawrence on a deep sideline pass.
Daniel had a similar path, connecting with Tommylee Lewis that got a good crowd reaction, and then closed out practice with a pick by Arthur Maulet. The play was whistled dead before Daniel threw it.
Tryout kicker Patrick Murray had two of his kicks blocked by the blue pads. They definitely had some low trajectory on them. Meanwhile, Wil Lutz was perfect on his field goal attempts.
Defense Shines
Drew Brees ended up getting picked off by Craig Robertson after his pass his the foot of Coby Fleener and tipped up in the air. There was a pretty common theme of the defense winning some battles. Marcus Williams had a good pass breakup against Jordan Williams-Lambert on a deep sideline route (could be argued that it was a drop), and I noted the closing speed of Williams when the ball was up in the air.
quote:
Highlights
Corey Fuller hauled in a deep sideline route with De’Vante Harris providing good coverage. Vonn Bell also made a big pass breakup that led to a Delvin Breaux interception. The aforementioned Tommylee Lewis catch that got a good crowd reaction was from him going vertical to secure a Chase Daniel pass. Grayson connected with Fleener on a deep sideline route, which was good to see.
Alvin Kamara Hype
Kamara continues to impress, and one of the things I noted was his jump off the snap. At one point, Brees swung it out to Kamara, and there wasn’t a defender with several yards thanks largely in part to some good blocking downfield from Michael Thomas. He was a familiar target on the day, and Sean Payton, Drew Brees, and Mark Ingram have all praised the rookie.
Overall, there was more intensity to this practice than Tuesday. The team had a bit more special teams work on the day, focusing on some kickoff coverage/returns and onside kicks. Speaking of, Alvin Kamara and Travaris Cadet took starting reps there.

we have so many players i'm so fricking excited for about their current projection and futures in the league. Love this team. We're young and improving with a HOF qb.

I like this.....

Really excited about our depth at LB and DB but the DL scares me. Relying on a situational player (Okafor) and a 2nd-year guy who had very limited snaps as a rookie (Onyemata) as starters are troubling.

I'm very intrigued by this current starting DL of Jordan, Rankins, Onyemata, and Okafor. I feel like it could be really good or really bad.

I think Lattimore and Williams are two incredible young DB's that will immediately make this defensive backfield much better. I think Williams has the talent of a first round pick and will show it this season, and udfa signee Arthur Maulet will prove to be a steal too. All 3 of these youngsters will vastly improve this secondary.

Something to remember with the Dline is Davison (main NT from last year) is still out and Kikaha is being worked in slowly. We have some depth there, but possibly losing Fairley really hurts.

Onyemata is only "starting" because Davison is out. Davison is a solid player. the DE spot opposite Jordan is what it is.

I think you responded to the wrong poster. lol I didn't make a comment about the DLine, but I agree with what you said. And because of what you said I think we all know what position should be the number one pick at next draft - a pass rushing DE (ala Arden Key).

Sounds like Lutz dragged his nuts all over that other kicker.
"Get that shite outta here!"

Key is more of a 3-4 OLB, but I agree...dude is a beast at getting to the QB. Maybe the best ever at LSU in that department.
Unless we lose like 11 games, he won't be there for our pick anyway. He's going top 10(maybe top 5) unless he completely shits the bed this year.
I think Guice is easily a top 25 pick as well...maybe even higher.

Okafor isn't a situational player. He was only one in Arizona because they had 2 guys with double digit sacks.
He also played through injury last season.

I don't expect Key to be there when the Saints pick, I'm just putting a name to the description. But as for as him being a OLB like you are saying that depends on his size. He has added weight and muscle during his weird exile from LSU and is now close to 260, well, in between 255 to 260 according to folks. Key is a legit 6'6", if he keeps working on size and strength he could get to 270 or close and that would make him a legit DE just like Clowney. I think he is more DE than OLB anyways because he would definitely be a liability in pass coverage situations.

Yea, if he gains the weight without losing speed...I could see him being a 4-3 DE. He's pretty thin though. He would need to put on at least 20 pounds of muscle. He's still very young and has plenty of time for that though.

Yea, Davison will be in the game on 1st downs whenever he's healthy. He'll even be in the game over Rankins during running downs(assuming Fairley is good to go this year).
If our top 3 DT's are healthy this year...I don't see Onyemata getting a ton of playing time this year at DT. I could actually see him getting a lot of playing time at DE on running downs if Okafor can't get the job done against the run. Tapp is decent against the run, but he's more of a backup option at this point(if he even makes the team). We have plenty of guys to rush the passer at DE...like a shite load.

Signing Tony McDaniels helps a little.

Did not see anyone ask, but does anyone know if Okafor is primarily playing with his hand on the ground, or is he going back & forth? I seam to recall his style in AZ where he played up a lot; similar to a 3-4 edge guy.

Uh oh. He's becoming a complete WR.

I'm pretty sure it's going to be hands down only. Not dropping back nearly as much as in AZ.
