quote:

"Listen, so I signed a one-year extension, so that was this year and then next year," Brees said. "And so I plan on playing that out and just allowing things to take form and take shape here for next year and putting forth my absolute best effort to help us win a division championship and then a world championship.

quote:

"And then, again, just one year at a time, and that's not a lack of commitment or anything like that. It's just, I just want to focus on what's right in front of me."

That is best for all parties involved, imo

Don't blame him

If we don't use FA and the draft to completely overhaul this defense then I'd want to get the hell out too

He needs to go to Denver and win a superbowl then retire. I feel bad for the guy always playing with a shitty defense.

Can't blame him, he goes to a team with better management like Denver, he'd be contending for a ring. His play and his offense dictates that we should be better than 7-9, but the FO decision making on personnel has fricked this team since 2012 and we finally got back on track.

2017 is going to be one hell of a year. One way or another.

What a mess Payton has created. It's gonna be sad seeing him play anywhere else.

And break the passing yards and passing TDs in another uniform

He'll always be a Saint.

At this point, he is putting up 5000+ yard, 35+ TD seasons every year and there is nothing to show for it. He is still healthy. He has to keep his options open.

If he's 39 years old, healthy, and can go get a Super Bowl and make $12-15 million per year doing it, why would he not?

Next year must be a playoff team or Brees will want to have a last chance to contend and leave. Don't blame him for that. I wonder if his team wanted his contract to be the way it was for this reason.

But ya, it makes sense for both sides. Guess we'll see.

Yep. They need to keep him for at least 2-3 more years. We'll either be a contender again or we'll have the silver lining of watching him break Peyton and Brett's records in a Saints uniform.

It's amazing how the media sucks off Aaron Rodgers but he only has one Super Bowl title like Drew.

I guess a lot of elite talent going by the wayside. Meanwhile, Eli wins two super bowls and he is not better than Aaron or Drew. Sometimes, life happens and sometimes shite happens.

That's probably because Rodgers is better than Brees and Eli is not better than Brees or Rodgers.

Just a hunch.

I fear if we do not make the playoffs next year, Brees & Payton are gone.

To be fair, the NFL suspended our FO in 2012

Honestly, if we have another good draft like we just had and actually hit on some FA's and we still don't make the playoffs in 2017...would you even want CSP back?

I mean I want him to stay and I think if we make the right moves we will be in the hunt, but if everything goes right and he still doesn't make the playoffs should he even stay even if it means we lose Brees too?

Next year is playoffs or bust. No more excuses. The last 4 out of 5 seasons have given us 7-9. Pathetic for an organization with a Top 5 QB and a Top 5 offense year in and year out.

So let's say worst case scenario - payton leaves and drew's contract expires. He wan'ts to leave. In that scenario we would have lost all ability to trade him for anything?

brees knows his arm strength is gone and he cant keep getting put on the ground every other play.

I wish he stays here but if I were him I would be thinking of going to Denver in 2018 and have one last shot at super bowl.

this team is a mess and needs a complete rebuild on both sides of the ball plus 90% turnover in the FO and coaching to have a chance to truly compete again and that takes years to turn around so there is no place for drew in that scenario, that's just the sad but plain truth
