what? Seriously? Nobody thought Cassell was going to step in and they do what they did. Brady is damn important. Just cause you know they'll be a dropoff doesn't mean you look to diminish the said dropoff in anyway possible.

Well of course Brady is important--he is a QB, but I would still argue that he's less important to his team than Drew Brees is to his.

How much were they paying Cassel anyway? I know he was drafted pretty late.

Well After Drew and Peyton, Brady has to be right there as for most valuable to team.

They were paying him nickels and dimes.

That's kinda what I figured. What a stellar deal for them, however I still think it was mostly a fluke and not awesome planning on the parts of the Pats, though.

I do think I'd rather see the Saints get a young guy to groom under Drew instead of going with a more veteran QB.

Why is everyone overlooking Chase Daniel? I'd like to pick up Colt McCoy or Dan LeFevor, but not in the second or third round. Let's try the Chase Daniel experiment before we start drafting QB's.

I say we get Brandon Marshall as the backup QB. Wildcat all day baby.

You know, it is true that he's overlooked. I don't even think that he particularly sucks, but he's very green. I honestly haven't seen/heard from about him at all.

I think a lot of Cassells sucess was due to QB's coach McDaniel and the Patriots being such a good team. Cassell looked pretty pedestrian last year....and yes, I'm aware KC doesn't have the talent surrounding Cassell like New England, but look how well Orton did under McDaniel in Denver.

its all about coaching and the right system for a lot of the young qb's to be sucessful right away.

Great idea.

Offer Denver a 7th rounder because we want to play him out of position. We then take him and list him on the roster as a QB. Before the draft, we have a presser telling everyone we made a mistake and that his throwing mechanics are off; we then trade him to Seattle for the 14th pick.

I said it here first. If some jackass sports writer puts this in his/her blog, you know who plagiarized whom!

da frick?

you sign a decent back up and you still have a shot if Brees went down.

right now with Brunell, we have no shot.

I'm with you.

I've read this "if Drew goes down, we're screwed anyways" crap for the last few years. I think that's stupid. Yeah, they'll be a drop off but you try to get the best you can get at the most important position on the field. Makes no sense.

OK, LE, who would you suggest we get?

there are several guys on the market that have won games in this league that would be better than Brunell

Culpepper
Delhomme
rex Grossman

then guys like Brodie Croyle, Charlie Frye, Chris Redman with NFL experience and some upside

a guy i really like, if he gets cut, is Marc Bulger.

the Saints can win games and be competitive with any of those guys with the way the offense is built and the weapons we have.

I dont understand the thought that we are totally fricked if Brees goes down. Sure, right now we may be, but it doesnt have to be that way

There has to be an X factor I don't know about if Brunell is still the back up after last season. He's so terrible now.

Like LE said, get a young guy with some upside or at least someone that has a chance to rejuvenate their better qb days like a culpepper. The only good thing about Brunell being on the team is helping the young qbs grow. That's it.

That would be ironic. Returning to the team that drafted him to end his career.

I think he'd be a nice backup.

Brunell sealed his fate when he started and played an entire game this past season and SUCKED. I thought he was a solid backup until then. We could have stuck with Harrington for 1/2 the price. I agree with Lester.. a Bulger or Delhomme would be optimal..but how much moolah do they want to be a backup?

Redman just signed a new two-year deal with the Falcons LINK. He would have been ideal, though. All the other guys you mention would be better than Brunell except Culpepper -- he was really bad at the end of last year when Stafford got hurt, and he ended up getting benched in favor of Drew Stanton.

I still say we draft someone in the 6th round or so.

Actually, I agree with you on most of these--especially Bulger. Well, maybe not Grossman because he's way too inconsistent, but even he'd be an improvement over Brunell.

I thought the argument was that we needed to draft someone with the potential to be a great QB, though.....

What about Chase Daniel? The Saints must be high enough on him...he is on the active roster. Anybody got a real feel for him?
