The rookies vs. the veterans. Or, for a lack of a better term, the “Young Guns” vs. “Old School”.

There are several such battles brewing already on the New Orleans Saints football team that will slowly began to play themselves out beginning tomorrow.

That’s when the team reconvenes for the start for the first series of OTA’s (Off-Season Training Activities approved by the NFL), then again two more times (June 2-4 and June 8-11); in which the team begins the installation of offensive and defensive schemes that they intend to use in 2015.

These battles are expected to last well into the summer; through Mandatory Mini-Camp June 16-18, Training Camp July 29-September 3rd; and likely all the way down to the announcement of the 53-man Final Roster a week prior to the regular season opener on September 13th in Glendale (suburban Phoenix) Arizona against the Cardinals.

While there are potentially several such battles that will take place, there are 3 of them in particular that I can’t personally wait to see; simply for the impact it can have on the football team.

In one specific battle, it will actually be a case where we will see an older guy with his proverbial ‘back against the wall’, come out swinging with everything’s he got — a classic case of an older guy currently going through the stages of obvious physical decline and diminishing skills, trying to prevent a younger, quicker and more physically dominant individual from taking away his job.

So — now that I’ve given you that small appetizer, let’s get to the main course; as I present to you the 3 Saints Roster Battles I Can’t Wait to See in 2015……

HAU’OLI KIKAHA VS. PARYS HARALSON, “SAM” LINEBACKER

Though it’s expected that rookie sensation Hau’oli Kikaha, the 2nd Round pick (#44 overall) out of the University of Washington, will compete mostly at the strongside (or “Sam”) linebacker position, he has the capability and versatility to play on the outside edge (or “Jack”) linebacker position as well.

In fact, as an edge rusher in Washington’s defense in 2014, Kikaha led the NCAA in sacks with 19; after playing at the strongside position during the previous season in 2013, where he got more 13 sacks coming from that side of the field.

You can believe that defensive coordinator Rob Ryan loves Kikaha’s versatility to do different things; and will devise several ways to get Kikaha on the field in a variety of different looks, to create havoc for opposing offenses.

Primarily, I believe that the Saints will use Kikaha at the “Sam” position, with the benefit being that they’ll have all of their best pass-rushers (Galette, Cam Jordan, and Kikaha) all on the field at the same time.

That in turn means that veteran and current starter at “Sam” linebacker, Parys Haralson, is going to have his hands full with the rookie (whose first name of Hau’oli means “happy” in the Hawaiian native language) nipping at his heels from Day One.

Haralson is now is in his third year with the Saints after playing his first seven seasons in the League with the 49ers, who drafted him out of the University of Tennessee in 2006.

While Haralson, the 31 year old Flora, Mississippi native and former High School All-American is still capable of being an effective player at the strongside position, there is no way that I can see him staving off the challenge of the hard-charging rookie; and I fully expect Kikaha will be your new starter at “Sam” linebacker in the first week of September.

Barry’s Projected Winner: Hau’oli Kikaha

ANDRUS PEAT VS. ZACK STRIEF, OFFENSIVE RIGHT TACKLE

It was just two weeks ago when the 31-year old veteran and incumbent starting offensive Right Tackle Strief told NOLA.com / The Times Picayune Saints beat writer Katherine Terrell that he knows that everyone expects the massively large 6’7, 320 pound Peat to take away his job for him, but indicted he wasn’t going down without a fight.

“He’s taking my job eventually. That is definitely happening. At some point, that’s happening. My job and my role is to make that take as long as possible. And that’s how I’ll approach it.”

Though I can’t see Strief holding off Peat, who by all accounts has been very impressive thus far in the eyes of head coach Sean Payton and offensive line coach Brett Ingalls, there is another variable at play in this particular situation.

Peat was a standout left tackle at Stanford, but the Saints already have a pretty good left tackle in place with current starter Terron Armstead; so in essence, the addition of Peat now means that the Saints have 3 starting offensive tackles.

I think because of that versatility to do both, we will see Peat rotating in on both the right and the left side during his rookie season.

Also, don’t be surprised if you see the Saints utilize a lot of “Jumbo” packages, in which Strief comes in as an eligible receiver (basically as a 2nd TE), as he often did previously when he came in to block in the place of former TE Jimmy Graham (whose only concept of a ‘block’ are the ones that toddlers play with).

So, the actual “starter” at the Right Tackle may be more about semantics, than actual competition.

However, here’s one thing that to remember in all of this: in order for the Saints offense to continually produce at a high level of expectation as it always has, they unquestionably need to have outstanding protection for Drew Brees, something that they clearly lacked in 2014.

So, if it turns out that by putting Peat at the RT spot that it suddenly inspires and pushes the 31-year old Strief to play better, then that’s a good thing.

Additionally, if Strief comes out swinging with everything he’s got and plays so well that Peat can’t get on the field immediately, then that’s a good thing, too.

Either way, it’s a “win-win” situation for the Saints — and the only way that that they could lose in this particular situation is unless of course that they both underperform or get hurt (God forbid).

Nevertheless, there has to be a starter at RT, and while Peat will likely be all over the place, I think in the end he will be the starter.

You’re not going to have your #1 pick, a guy that you expect to make an immediate impact, sitting on the bench when the Saints offensive unit lines up on the first play from scrimmage in Week #1 at Arizona.

Barry’s Projected Winner: Andrus Peat

STEPHONE ANTHONY VS. DAVID HAWTHORNE, “MIKE” LINEBACKER

The middle or “Mike” linebacker as it’s often referred to, is the spot normally where the leader of your defense lines up, and more times than not, it’s not a spot usually entrusted to a rookie.

But then again, most rookies aren’t as good as the 2nd of two first round 2015 Draft Picks by the Saints, in outstanding inside linebacker Stephone Anthony from Clemson.

Middle linebackers are at a premium in the NFL these days, and I can count on my hand the very select few that have been “impact players” in this most recent generation of NFL stars at the position: Carolina’s Luke Kuechly, recently retired 49ers LB Patrick Willis, New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo, and last year’s top defensive rookie: Baltimore LB C.J. Mosley.

You can go ahead and add Anthony’s name to that list.

Anthony as you know by now, has the leadership skills and the play-making ability to become a future “star” in the NFL. I’ve recently seen him compared to two other players quite often; in current Ravens LB Terrell Suggs, and a former Saint at that position: former Super Bowl champ and team defensive leader Jonathan Vilma, who retired after the 2013 season.

Anthony is a relentless sideline-to-sideline defender, who also has the natural instincts to play downhill and in the open field. He can run with tight ends in the passing game, and blow up RBs in the backfield on run defense.

In my eyes, there’s just absolutely no way this kid doesn’t take the spot.

Now — once again, I have to give this ‘disclaimer’ about the playing abilities and capability of veteran and the current “Mike” LB, David Hawthorne. In no way am I trying to ‘slight’ or attempting to be disrespectful towards him.

Hawthorne is a dependable player with good communication skills, and it’s the reason that Payton anointed him in March as the new man to run the defense in place of Curtis Lofton, who was released and signed in Free-Agency with the Raiders.

However, Hawthorne has NEVER been what you’d consider a “big play” maker, and last year will playing at the weakside or “Will” LB spot, was often criticized for being out of position or missing tackles. (Unbelievably, Hawthorne only whiffed on 16 tackles last year — though it seemed like 160).

One “wild card” in all of this is the man who at this moment is projected to be the starter at the weaskside /”Will” spot, recently acquired (in the Kenny Stills trade with Miami) LB Dannell Ellerbe.

Ellerbe is coming off an injury that kept him out for most of 2104 with the Dolphins, and though he says that he is healed and ready to go, it’s not out of the question that the Saints could move Hawthorne back to that spot, and thus leave him in the same line-up together with Anthony.

Either way, I believe that if Anthony has to compete directly with Hawthorne for the “Mike” spot, he will win it outright — hands down, no questions asked.

In fact, I’ll be surprised if it’s even close…….

Someone likes him some rookies.

The only one I disagree with is Peat v Strief.
I think Peat will play, but Strief will get the lion's share of snaps at RT.

But Anthony over Hawthorne is obvious and necessary.

Another one I am personally looking forward to is the Nickel CB spot. Gonna be great competition at that spot because of the amount of players trying to win it. We have P.J. Williams, Delvin Breaux, SJB, Brian Dixon, Terrence Frederick, Kyle Wilson & Damian Swann.

I personally think Breaux wins the starting job there.

The whole CB depth chart battle is very interesting. I hope Breaux makes it. It would be nice if SJB lived up to his potential as well.

Agreed. While Peat is obviously the future, it's not easy to come in and just replace a guy who's started at tackle for years. Strief isn't a HOF by any means, but he's a good tackle who knows the offense as well as anyone on the team

For maybe the past five years or so we haven't had many starting spots up for grabs and the ones most up for grabs(the LB spots) never got drafted high. So it's not surprising that we've had few rookies contribute big.

This year we drafted at three very upgradable spots (Mike, Sam, and Nickel) along with a spot that would have been open in a couple of years (RT) and another that is undetermined when it will be open (QB). We also drafted depth and insurance at DE with Hicks and Jordan being FAs next year. In addition we also drafted a potential "starting" return man and added another Vaccaro type player.

I'm not sold on Peat beating Strief or nobody moving to guard, but this does seem like the best draft we've had for rookies having an immediate impact.

I agree. I also see Strief over Peat for the most part to start off with, and Anthony is definitely the obvious starter at this point. I think Kikaha is probably going to be eased in as a pass rush specialist. He can still make major impact in that role, but anything more would be surprising and awesome.

Heck yeah. All of us lurkers are pulling for him! I remember when he was being recruited by LSU. What a story and what a comeback. If he can play nickel, we've got a complete secondary, imagine that.

Bold prediction: Browner is surpassed by Breaux and Lewis by mid-season. Browner plays nickel.

Yeah Kikaha may not be a starter right away imo, but he'll get enough snaps for it to not matter.

Anthony seems like obvious one unless there a disaster between now and Arizona.

Peat/Strief is a real tough call. Strief kind of fell of a bit at times last season and seemed to be banged up, but still played well at times. However, I don't think they draft an OT high with an aging Brees just to sit right away. They'll find a way to play the best 5 O-line whether someone moves to guard or not.
