Saints come in at No. 2

quote:

The skinny: The Saints finish a distant second, but they did very well for themselves, joining the Browns and Steelers as the only teams to add five prospects from Brandt's top 100. The players (points): No. 4: Marshon Lattimore (147) No. 19 Ryan Ramczyk (132) No. 38: Marcus Williams (113) No. 79: Alvin Kamara (72) No. 93: Alex Anzalone (58)

they certainly added a lot of talent, some with serious health questions, but overall, they were mostly great picks based on talent and player grades.

at a few spots I would have preferred a lower grade player selected that addressed our desperate need for a pass rusher but where we ended up picking under the circumstances its hard to not like the outcome.

that said I strongly feel we will be here at week 8 of the season talking about a lack of any sort of pressure on opposing QB and if only we had drafted somebody different (not talking about at #11)

No surprise they gave it to Cle. They had 3 firsts, the first pick in the second, a third and 3(?) fourths.

Man, Gil Brandt still doing his thing.

Thought he would have had Kamara ranked higher.

Mayock had him 27th. And that's a good look into how two different teams' boards can look completely different with many players.

On one he had a low first round grade, and on another he had a mid third.

I know they praise Cleveland's draft, but if you gave me the choice, I would take the Saints' draft 10 out of 10 times over theirs.

Just my opinion, but I think Garrett isn't that special, Peppers will have trouble finding a position to play, Kizer won't see the field.

I think Lattimore and Kamara will have big impacts, Williams, Ramczyk will contribute, and Hendrickson may well be as effective as Garrett (before you go insane about that, go look at what Garrett actually did against SEC teams and in bowl games, instead of the cupcakes on the schedule).

I agree, but these things are always graded on name recognition as much as how good a player might be (not so much in this case but in general).

I honestly do not believe there was an elite DE in this draft. Some will be very good, but I don't think you had a Peppers or a Watt or guys like that.

Meanwhile I do think Lattimore has potential to be an elite CB, with decent size, great speed and athleticism, and good skill.

I agree completely, and I think Garrett was a reach at the #1.

I just looked up and compared Garrett's stats, against Hendrickson's.
Garrett just has the slightest edge in size/speed (6'6, 270, 4.64 vs 6'4, 266, 4.66), and in total sacks (32.5 vs 29). 6 games against Bama and Auburn, he was able to get 3 sacks (one game against each). Hendrickson played Bama and Auburn once each, was shut out.
Both played K State this year, Hendrickson got a sack and Garrett didn't.
They both gave Rice problems, Hendrickson had 3.5 in 3 games (2 last year, 1.5 the year before, 0 as a freshman) and Garrett had 2.5 in one game.

Garrett played on a team that scored a bunch, especially against cupcakes, and forced the other team to pass.
Hendrickson's team WAS a cupcake, and a lot of teams were likely running the ball heavily by halftime.

Garrett was the 1st overall pick, and we got Hendickson at 103. Garrett is the better player (most likely), but there doesn't look like THAT much separation.

I agree that Hendrickson was a good pick. After watching a few highlights I was actually pretty impressed.

Sack or not, he influences the pocket and creates pressure quite often. I know, I know - Conference leader in QB hurries wow!!!

But I see the potential in him, especially since Vitt is finally gone as LBer coach

With Hendrickson, you really have to keep a couple of things in mind-
Florida Atlantic was a crappy team. Not just a cupcake for the Power 5 and AAC teams that scheduled them, but also not a big threat even within their own conference.

He was able to be an impact player, despite that.

I know it isn't a direct 1:1 correlation here, but imagine what he could have done, on a good team, where he wasn't the only player you look for, and where you can't just run the ball the entire 2nd half and get the W.

People are going to be looking at Cam Jordan, not Trey Hendrickson. And given our offense, they are going to be passing a lot, to keep up.

I think he's going to surprise the fans.

I think the talent is there I just think he's gonna have to work on his hands since he has the short arms. But he has the potential to be a Jared Allen one day.

He's got that pass rusher bend around the edge that all the good ones have. He's got the size, the relentlessness and athletic ability. It's just going to be up to him and also Nielsen to get him to where he could be

This year I am hoping a lot of peeps got insight into big boards and mocks. The more ya realize the vast rating differences the more ya don't bang the table over your dream mock. Niners rate Foster as #2 overall. 20+ other teams don't. Also the further down the board ya go the more the variance.

There's truly no telling until 3-5 years later. We thought we had plugged MLB with a #31. Going into his third year we're hoping he can contribute anything. On the other side, I don't think many were predicting all pro studness from a #75 tackle from Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
