I don't necessarily disagree, but as long as your HOF TE is on the field and producing, you don't bench him just because you drafted his hopeful successor. When you draft the next guy up to a player like Gates, you do so, most of the time, not knowing how much longer her has left (in our case, Brees). In Gates' case, he happens to still be around and Green is a FA now.
Green played well in Gates' absence this year, so everyone knows he can play. I'm not saying there's no way he gets out of SD, but I can bet the Chargers are going to give their full effort to re-sign him.
