I cant understand for the life of me why Roberts plays over Rivers. Rivers has so much more potential. He either needs to play or put in the D-league to work on his game. A second year lottery pick will not improve sitting on the bench.

How many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop? I guess we will never know.

I agree I think Rivers should be out there before Roberts. Roberts can be a better shooter at times.

Rivers to me has looked good when in the game. He is still young but he is improving.

He is bigger and a better defender.

While Rivers has potential, he seems to screw up at inopportune times. And I'm actually a fan of the guy. I remember being at the Cleveland game. He loses the ball and picks up a bad foul. Then, seconds later, he misses two free throws.

Maybe he should be given a chance to play through it all. I don't know.

At this point, Monty having to choose between Roberts and Rivers is just guesswork from night to night about which one will be least terrible.

I know people want more Rivers, but sorry, the guy's terrified on the offensive end of the court. Did people watch him vs the Knicks? He wanted absolutely nothing to do with the ball. He touched it once and got away with a travel, immediately getting rid of it. Touched it again another possession and threw it right back to the guy who passed it to him. Touched it again at the end of a shotclock and dumped it off to Tyreke 5 feet behind the 3 point line for him to chuck up an airball.
Monty's begging one of those guys to take the backup PG spot and neither can do it, because neither is a good player.

See, this is where you go off the deep end. You completely ignore how Rivers was playing pre-Knicks, when he was getting backup PG (not SG) minutes in place of Brian Roberts. Roberts doesn't know how to pass. Rivers doesn't know how to shoot. That is a combination of epic proportions with Roberts running point.

Rivers was playing well, and Monty inexplicably went back to Brian Roberts. Rivers looks like he's trying to make his dad happy out there on an NBA basketball court. This is Monty's failing. EVERYTIME the kid starts building confidence lately, Monty finds some reason to make sure he doesn't see the court. The part that pisses most of us off is his "accountability level" for Roberts and Rivers seems to be drastically different, and I, for the life of me, do not understand what Roberts has done to earn such a long leash.

Back to OP:

We have different definitions of "well"

He's still a really bad player.

Stop. Roberts and Rivers have BOTH been benched this year. Both are terrible and thats why he's forced into trying to figure out their minutes from night to night.

Monty Williams basically watched Rivers grow up. He's best friends with his dad. If any coach in the league wants Austin to succeed as much as Doc, its Monty. Most coaches would've given up on Rivers already. The fact that he's been this awful and still gets any minutes at all shuts down that "Monty finds some reason to make sure he doesn't see the court," nonsense.

Monty has done this the whole time he's been here on positions where there is little separation of bad players. He cycles through them randomly hoping they'll get better but they don't so the cycle continues. Honestly Roberts over Rivers didn't bother me as much as Roberts over Gordon in the 4th. Did Roberts name his new kid Monty or something?

Quit hugging Monty's nuts and open your eyes. Even TigerinATL proves my point in a post below yours. Would Monty, under any circumstance, allow Austin Rivers to close out a game over EG10?

Roberts fricking blows dude. The team is noticeably different when he's running point. The ball doesn't move, he's a wisp of a defender, and he's foul prone to boot.

Confidence and direction are a wonderful thing. Monty provides zero of either to his players.

So I am going against the crowd here. I think Monty made the right call with this decision (which I usually don't). I think Roberts is a better offensive option in the scoring department. Rivers is a better overall player in my opinion, but last night we needed another 3 pt option with anderson on the floor. Felton wasn't a threat so why not put in Roberts. I wouldn't be surprised if Monty does the same decision tonight against te bulls. But expect a lot of rivers against the thunder.

You obviously didn't watch the game.

They both suck, thats the point. But if you want to go with, Monty hates Rivers, go ahead.
